Sidney Bechet - everything

Him and bennie goodman are the greatest clarinetists IMO

But im also biased because bechet is from New Orleans.

And nb4 some noob posts some shitty miles davis.

His best album was his debut album, Kind of blue. Nothing else is worth discussing. Hes a smack head trying to be avant garde.

Ok - I agree on Becehet. But, do some more research on Miles. Kind of Blue was not his first album, by a long shot.

Right.

Blue Period? I got them confused. I likes his fifties stuff the most when he was proving himself.

So you'd rather an artist keep rehashing earlier works instead of experimenting (or in this case - inventing) new styles? Aren't risk-taking and evolution good things?

Also smack heads in the jazz scene are a dime a dozen.

Im just saying hes a little overrated and he thought he was better than he actually was. (Was a prick on stage)

The experimenting was cool. I respect it. It brought jazz to new places it had never been. Im just saying its not for me and isnt exactly enjoyable to listen too IMHO. I feel the same about coltrane. Very talented but too many notes for my tastes. Give me sonny rollins any day. I like the old school stuff from the 30s - 50s as opposed to the 60s psychedlic experimental fusion stuff they started doing.

Eta: and his era was the decline of jazz music if that tells you anything about the direction that davis/coltrane were taking jazz

Donald Byrd was also a chameleon going from hard bop New Perspective (1964) to jazz fusion The Emperor (1972) and then jazz funk Places and Spaces (1975). Eventually he even did electro Sexy Dancer (1982)
