"The government consists of a gang of men exactly like you and me. They have, taking one with another, no special talent for the business of government; they have only a talent for getting and holding office. Their principal device to that end is to search out groups who pant and pine for something they can't get and to promise to give it to them. Nine times out of ten that promise is worth nothing. The tenth time is made good by looting A to satisfy B. In other words, government is a broker in pillage, and every election is sort of an advance auction sale of stolen goods."

Elitist POS he was. If he were alive today he'd be a Ravens fan or a bottom or both.

Quote someone respectable, possibly the OT would care.

And nothing, if you support the American experiment. Granted, it failed as soon as the Thirteenth Amendment was passed.

Any personal opinions of the speaker of the quote aside, I find very little in the quote itself with which to disagree .

"As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice."-Adolph Hitler

We can POS quotes till the cows come home.

Mencken has been relegated to the ash heap of history because he was a POS.

If you want a discussion on politics, we can discuss politics.

Racist, elitist, and anti-democratic. Why the hell would anyone quote HL Mencken?

"As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people... On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

He managed the neat trick of being a racist and also hating white southerners, with the bonus of despising evangelical Christianity and everything it stood for. He was sort of a political Finebaum of the 1920's. If he were alive today, the Poliboard would passionately hate him. Fact.

Because people we find disagreeable can still, occasionally, speak the truth?

Just because he was wrong/bigoted about certain things does not mean he was not absolutely dead-on about others.

Also
quote:

anti-democratic.
is one of the reasons I like Mencken.

quote:

The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out... without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane, intolerable.
