Taking my son squirrel hunting this weekend. What's the best shell size and choke combo? I have a 12 and he has a 20.

#6's with a tight choke to bust through the leaves still on the trees.
Just be careful and don't wound one ........ I heard they charge when only wounded....

Full choke and 5s or 6s. High brass. If your son doesn't have a lot of experience shooting you may want to stick a modified in his gun.

The only 20ga 6's I could find were the high velocity steel, but Academy had plenty of 7.5. Will that suffice with a full choke?

I'd sidestep the steel shot.
I normally use .22 but for shotgun, I'd go with 5's if 6's can't be found.

I've shot squirrel with steel shot. I noticed no difference between steel and lead when hunting squirrels. Ducks are obviously a different story.

I'm anti steel and only use it when required by law.

What's the difference with the High Brass?

7.5 might be too small for early season. You might get by it when the leaves have fallen.

I use a full choke and #4 or 5 no matter what gauge I'm using. Preferably 4, and almost always out of a .410 if I use a shotgun.

high brass 6 shot with a full choke would be my first choice...reach out and touch them...
fwiw, a shot size difference either way won't really matter, though...

If you hunt with steel shot you better wear some tenny shoes so you can chase them down and slap them against a tree when they hit the ground running.

For "normal" squirrel hunting, I use #4, 5, or 6 high brass with full choke.

Most guns dont reccomend steel thru a full choke so I would use a mod choke or change to 7.5 lead w full choke
