Here is a pic what I am looking at right now. The strategy for this race has been to tie Joni Ernst to the Koch Brothers. Every ad, banner, commercial is always railing about how bad the Koch Brothers are and how she is in bed with them. They really have nothing else.

But this strategy has to be effective for them to continue to use it, right? If it didn't work they would try something else I am guessing, but I give people too much credit. You think the average person would be smart enough to understand that big donors exist on both sides.

It's not the big donor issue, it's the things you can tie the Koch brothers to that are big issues for many on the left. It's not going to dissuade anyone who's already a Democrat from voting for their candidate, so that doesn't hurt. It's not going to sway any Republicans, so that doesn't hurt. It may energize the far left base, and that's a surprisingly substantial little group. Certainly enough of one to turn a close election.

I'd probably spend less time on it, but given that politics is basically a team sport anymore and that a Republican would never vote for a Democrat now and vice versa, probably some of the most effective ads are those that get each base riled up.

Like it or not, an "Obama is a Muslim" ad would work wonders in South Louisiana to rile up the conservative base.

I never knew who the Koch brothers were before they were mentioned on here.

Maybe 5% of the population knows who they are.

None of my friends in college know who they are.

After absorbing millions of dollars in outside spending from groups connected to the Koch brothers, congressional Democrats have made the conservative billionaires the star villains in a messaging counteroffensive. But a new nonpartisan poll highlights a problem with the plan: A majority of likely 2014 voters have never even heard of the Kochs.

A 52 percent majority of respondents in the new George Washington University Battleground Poll said they had never heard of the Koch brothers, with an additional 11 percent saying they had no opinion of the conservative industrialists. Of the small slice who registered an opinion of the Kochs, 12 percent viewed them favorably and 25 percent viewed them unfavorably. The survey is one of the first to test opinions about the Kochs since they became a big subject of political conversation in the last few years.

I don't think so, but what platform can they run with.....they can't really prop up the last six years as a reason to vote Dem......they have to give a reason not to vote Rep.

The Dems talk about them in order to act as a chilling factor for other rich Repubs or Libertarians that are thinking about getting more involved in politics.

Think about it. The Majority Leader of the Senate has on several occasions called out private citizens from the floor of the Senate for daring to get involved in politics. This has to make others stop and think before getting more heavily involved.

Regardless of your opinion on their wealth or contributions, no citizen should be ok with the senate majority leader singling them out on the floor.

Them? No. But any member of Congress should feel comfortable calling out any citizen that is actually causing harm or doing dangerous things.

That's not the case here, but I wouldn't have a problem with it.

It's a pretty dumb strategy when Ernst is batshit crazy and he could be laboring that point about her. But perhaps batshit crazy sells in Iowa, so who knows.
