Getting a knife just to carry around while I'm out hunting. For putting the deer down if I don't get the spine/head/heart shot, or for cutting myself loose if I get my feet tangled up if I'm wading in a pond. That kind of stuff. Just-in-case.

Any recommendations for a double edged, fixed blade knife? This one looked good, except it's pretty long...LINK

Very true. Two edges are not better than one, but if you insist, CRKT Sting is badass (for a boot knife).

Vetter to take a close up shot with a bow or gun than to risk walking right up to it and losing the 'nads.

Thats not a hunting knife, and no offense, but its quite clear you have no idea what you are doing.

Unless you're using a knife as a combat knife a double blade makes no sense. Get a mora #2, or clipper, or 511. If you're looking for more tactical looking knife but still good and affordable the Glock field knife is an excellent knife and has a coating to protect against rust. I also really like the Kershaw bear and deer hunter knives as well for a hunting and skinning knife and they have a more rust resistant steel and have worked well for me. These are all good knives and under 30 bucks. If you wanna spend some more money the esee and randle adventure knives are good. The spyderco bushcraft knife is an excellent knife for the woods too.

RB,
I wouldn't worry about fitting that to your knife's job description. I've been hunting a number of years and having to do that w/ a knife has never crossed my mind. No need for a double edged knife. If I were you I'd spend some time cleaning some deer before putting down a lot of money on a knife; after you've skinned and dressed a few deer you'll have a better idea of what kind of knife YOU like. My personal preferences are:
fixed blade of 3 1/2-4" in length
Drop, spear or clip point
A handle long enough to fit all 4 fingers on it.
A nice finger guard to prevent the index finger from sliding up the blade.
Decent sheath
Synthetic handle.
I keep one of these Cold Steel "Roach Belly" Knife in my truck all the time and have skinned a bunch of deer and squirrels w/ it. Get something like it and start cleaning deer. Don't spend a bunch of $$$ w/o knowing what you need/want.

To the OP, just for general cutting shite when walking through woods/swamp I have a mini SOG machete with sheath that I clip to my backpack or fanny pack. It's about as short as you can get and still get enough momentum swinging it to cut through canes and stuff, back of it has a saw blade. Kinda shitty saw blade but it works for something quick. I don't have a link but I got it on sale for like $15.

ETA LINK Here it is

I don't like the tanto thing but it works for what it is.

Also good recs. I also have a Mora Clipper in my pickup. It's a nice deer skinning knife, as well.
