There are only 35 days until Election Day, and candidates across the country are racing to reach their voters and make a connection before they enter the voting booth.

If you watch TV, you’ve seen this in the works: political ads are running fast and furious in battleground states.

The Washington Post, with the help of the Federal Communications Commission and the Sunlight Foundation, has taken a look at which political parties buy airtime on which and what type of shows.

We pulled every PDF filed on behalf of a senate candidate from August 1 through last week (which includes buys into October). We ran a text-recognition tool on them, divvied them up by party, and then created a script that let us search for the names of shows.

Though they note that the method is imprecise due to abbreviations, the Washington Post staff noticed a few “clear patterns.”

They sectioned the shows up by time of day and type of television show, and created pie charts for each show – red for Republican, blue for Democrat, and yellow for Independent. The size of the graphs reflects the number of mentions in ad filings, and the graphs are listed from “More Republican” to “More Democrat.”

Some of that was pretty surprising.

Least shocking thing about this is liberals loving their Hollywood shows. Good lord.

Seems like democrats like Reality TV shows.

So it's confirmed, they are fricking idiots.

Republicans apparently like Big Bang Theory while democrats adore their celebrity gossip.

I doubt they are the group that was keeping Duck Dynasty popular all those years.

What has been on longer, Duck Dynasty or Survivor / Dancing with the Stars?

Dancing with the Stars and Survivor obviously.

But what would that have to do with anything?

Television is favored by an older demographic, which skews Republican. The few shows with a larger Democratic audience are ones that appeal to younger people.

Did you not see the overwhelming majority of Reality TV viewers were Democrats?

Younger viewers like reality TV. That's why it's so popular with networks and advertisers.

This isn't about loving shows. This is about persuading voters. I think the thread title is erroneous.

With a very few exceptions, most TV is not geared to an intellectual audience.

An overwhelming turnout for Two and a Half Men and Big Bang Theory is nothing to write home about.

So if I don't watch tv regularly but read instead. What's that mean?

Still better than an overwhelming turnout for So You Think You Can Dance.
