Time for some non-sentimental analysis based on the observable facts...offered from the cheap seats, in the spirit of respect and admiration for the skills and personal character of both young men.

Coming into the game, Anthony Jennings had sustained a withering chorus of negativity and criticism of his erratic performance thus far this season. Saturday was his chance to shut the critics up. I fully expected him to have the game of his life.

However, things didn't turn out that way. With his back against the wall, he withered under the pressure. He threw two interception and fumbled in the FIRST QUARTER.

Like it or not, those are the facts.

He played tight, he forced throws, he could not handle the pressure. It is obvious he let the pressure get to him and he just psychologically froze, against vastly inferior competition.

The statement he made last night was that he's not able at this time to prevail ON THE MERITS to be the LSU starting quarterback.

That doesn't mean that great days aren't ahead for him. It's not an indictment of his abilities or his character. It doesn't change my opinion of the great kind of kid he is. It doesn't mean I've "picked sides". It doesn't mean we are being "mean" to him or unfair in some way. It doesn't mean that we won't rely on him THIS YEAR to win ball games for us. It just means that HE made a statement yesterday, and we just observed the statement and made a conclusion.

Jennings made a statement with his lackluster performance and being in a highly competitive athletic Meritocracy, we should all acknowledge that statement for the good of the team. It's not in some way a negative thing, to arrive at a difficult decision based on performance and results.

We all know we will need both quarterbacks this season and beyond.

BUT Brandon Harris only out up those numbers against NMST, Jennings was playing alabama just dressed like NMST. Your arguments invalid

Very good post but quite frankly Jennings had that statement game last week. Sorry to break it to you.

mostly I agree. pressure can be debilitating. I think (certainly hope) he steps back and has a "frick it" i'm gonna be myself attitude going forward.

for the life of me, I can't understand why we couldn't run the ball with him in there. that could have made a huge difference in his performance.

And two interceptions and a fumble against NMSU in the first quarter was the bigger statement to me. Harris gave us EXACTLY what Harris always gives us. Seven touchdowns is pretty much what we expected. That's how he rolls.

I think Jennings is getting too much blame. Now, grated he did his best JJ impression but if you look at the drives he had:

The 3 drives with turn overs all were our of Les's favorite I-formation. The 1 drive we score with Jennings had him running the spread. Most of Harris' early drives we're run out of the spread also. If this isn't an eye opener for miles to start playing 2014 football then hes a frickig moron.

Lord knows it requires catastrophe to effect change under Miles.

Mr. Anti-Proactive needed more than a burning bush, and the team will reap the benefits on both sides of the ball, IMO.

NMSU's lone touchdown also led to a statement from the core of our signal calling extraordinaire defenseman, too. For those who may have missed it, do yourself a favor and rewatch their scoring play with eyes on the LB position.

In the first half, either late 1st or early 2nd quarter, there is a third down play where the NMSU QB fakes a handoff then rolls left w open space, but the backup LB covers half the field to push him out of bounds a couple yards shy of the first down.

Yes, I think there were at least a couple statements made last night that will benefit this team going forward.

By all accounts, Jennings is in there because he protected the ball better taking less risk. When he shows that he isn't necessarily doing this against a far inferior opponent, why should he remain.

quote:

Harris gave us EXACTLY what Harris
always gives us

On the flip side, Harris showed us the rewards that can come from taking the risks that Miles has been afforded the benefit of NOT taking, due to having superb defensive play in the past.

Well, I'm here to tell you that our defense is not superb this year, and we will need much reward from our risk taking signal caller, if we are to finish with less than 4 losses.

Some people focus on negatives, and some of us focus on positives.

I completely agree. Our offense is going to have to sustain drives and make big plays if we are to win games. This team is not defensively-sound enough to just require a "game-manager". We need a proactive playmaker to give us a realistic shot at winning big league games.

This is completely false. We've already relied on him this year to win us the opener down 24-7 to a good Wisconsin team. We'll need him again. Harris should be the starter next week though.
