Exploring the idea of taking my family to NYC prior to Christmas for 4 or 5 nights.

We have two small children (8 and 5) and believe it would be nice to let them see the sights (Macy's Parade, Rockefeller Center (Ice Skating), etc. of the city and explore for their age as much of New York as possible.

Any recommendations or must dos?

Also, from a hotel standpoint, where to stay? I'm a Hilton HHonors member and will be using points.

Waldorf Astoria and the palace are 2 good places to stay for the holidays.

I wouldn't recommend it for adults only, but one of the Hilton properties in times Square would be pretty awesome for kids.

I'd check out the 911 memorial, visit some museums, the square at night, statue of liberty.

Driving or flying in?

Take them to see a Broadway show, like Alladin or The Lion King.

Ice skating at the Rock is always packed. We went last Christmas and skated at Central Park. It was really fun and a lot easier. Plus I'm pretty sure skating at the Rock is in a time slot and Central Park is skate however long you like.

Go ice skating in Central Park, not the rockefellar center. Otherwise, it's a fun trip.

Hotels are very expensive at that time of year...

They don't really go up in points, though. I got the Conrad downtown for 34k a night during new year's one year, when the price in dollars was over $350/night.

The Christmas Spectacular. I second this. Have your concierge hook you up. Have your dinner at Bobby Vans in midtown

They also play at the Grande ole Opry in Nashville. Saw them a couple of years ago, very good show.

Flying. I wouldn't dare attempt driving this far with children.

Yes, why yes they are.

I have close to 400,000 Hilton points. About to drain them.

Yes, rooms are ranging anywhere from 70,000 to 80,000 points per night. A rip, but that's what we get for wanting to go around Christmas.

If I may make a suggestion, NYC before Christmas is an absolute nightmare. The city is crowded, hotels are expensive, restaurants are packed, taxis are not available, everywhere you go will be mobbed. I have taken my family to NYC on Christmas day, and stayed in the city a few days after Christmas, and that is actually very nice. I've been able to get fantastic hotel rooms at reasonable rates, eat where I want, get tickets to shows, etc. Not sure if you have the flexibility to do that, but I recommend going after Christmas if you can.

ETA: the the Waldorf is a dump, avoid.
