Got a call from the Shelby County Sheriff's dept this morning. One of the rifles that was stolen from me in 2011 was recovered (TC .35 Whelen). Pretty pumped. There's still an A Bolt 300 wsm floating around somewhere out there though.

I'll update with pics when I go get it. Will be interesting to see: A:how it was recovered and B: what kind of shape its in.

Anyway, just thought I'd post something positive about law enforcement for once.

Anybody else have stolen gun/property recovery stories?

***Update***

Just talked to the sergeant again, and he has informed me that my rifle was used in a man's suicide, and he didn't know what kind of shape its in. I'm now waiting on a call from the detective that actually has the gun.

I was really excited, and now I'm all like WTF. What do I do now? I've got to sell it right?

Good news for you. I'm still waiting to hear about 5 handguns taken in '85.

That's great.

Did they mention when you would be able to get it back?

I don't think you will have to wait for the .35 Whelen but with most other firearm recoveries they will do a ballistics check to see if the weapon matches any open cases.

No. The guy that called me was my investigating officer (Memphis metro) when it all went down (lazy POS) and said he was just going to give my info to the Sheriff dept because they're the ones that recovered it.

I tried calling this afternoon and no one answered. Wasn't surprised.

I'm gonna call again Monday and see if I can't make some headway. I'm sure they'll make it a pain in the arse.

Prayers sent. That sucks man. There are few worse feelings than being robbed blind.

In addition to the two guns they took:

Yukon
Leopold binos
2 Sure fires
2 Gerber blades
Half my wardrobe (left all the camo)
Passport
And a bunch of other shite. It was 20 or so items. Insurance didn't come close to replacing it all.

Had my first deer rifle (Ruger .270) given to be my dad stolen in a separate incident in 07 that's still out there.

Sucks.

"something positive about law enforcement"

"lazy pos"

"make it a pain in the arse"

Well that turned quickly.

No, the police dive team told me that my boating accident was too tragic for them to be able to locate my sunken collection.

Glad to hear you got something back.

I sincerely hope you never have to deal with the Memphis police. One of the most frustrating experiences of my life. Long story short:

The perps tried to write a check at a Target in Memphis with my name on it after I cancelled the account. Target sends me a letter notifying me that I owed them money. Called target and they said they could retrieve tapes down to the second at the precise register but could only do so if an officer requested. I told my investigating officer this and stayed on him about it. He, however, dropped the ball and waited to long to call them. They "clean" the tapes every 30 days and the footage was lost.

That coupled with the complete lackadaisical approach taken by everyone I talked to there, has skewed my opinion of cops in general but primarily the ones in that city.

I have no beef whatsoever with the locals though. I play golf regularly with the ex chief here. Good dude.

When I was working for an insurance co. as an adjuster. I would send a form letter to the Police Dept. saying insurance paid for the following guns with the serial #s and to contact me in the event one was recovered.

A small town PD called me and said that they had recovered a 12 gauge shotgun and I could come pick it up. I thought sweet I'm getting a free shotgun. I stopped in to pick it up and the officer handed me a piece of shite sawed of pump shot gun. Both the barrel and the stock were cut off as short as possible.

I hid it in my closet for a while and eventually took it apart and tossed it in the trash. Why the cops would give me an illegal weapon I have no idea.

I have a benelli still missing but I did get my 10 ga back. I wish cops and wardens would run gun numbers during routine license checks and traffic stops because a lot of people have no clue they are in possession of a stolen gun.

Funny you say that because there are a ton of people out there that disagree with you

Last time I was pulled over they did. Just so happens it was my weapon in my possession. They don't do that everywhere?

Good to hear your weapon was recovered and will be returned to you....: defiantly better then receiving a call saying "your firearm was recovered however it's been used in a homicide and cannot be returned to you"

Typically I'f a weapon is known an officer will run it through NCIC to verify it's not stolen.

When i was 12 or 13 I came home to find my house had been broken into. They stole all my dad's guns.

He was at work one day a few months later and a lake Charles officer came into the garage and handed him his .38. They'd found it during a drug raid. Only gun out of 7 or 8 that he got back.

Funny part of the burglary story was that it was the first time I ever saw a dildo. The thieves had rummaged through my stepmom's stuff and tossed the dildo on the floor. The cops were there taking Polaroids of the crime scene and there in the middle of a lot of photographs was "mr. Squirmy" (said that right on the box).

That's awesome. I'm still holding out hope I'll get a call one day about my Sigma and/or my old Recon.

I think Alx had one returned after 10+ years IIRC
