My dad has always wanted one so I decided to look into getting him one for Christmas.

The only one I could find online was going for $24,000.

Anybody own one of these badass pieces of American military history?

Nope, I would LOVE to own the Browning BAR M1918, John Browning was way ahead of his time. I think the ammo was actually a little weaker than todays stuff. I heard you can't shoot todays ammo in the M1 Garands either, That's another I'd love to have, seen em for $1000 and up.

My dad has a M1 Garand. It's badass.

Friend of mine almost pulled the trigger on a Thompson but he said the $19,000 the seller wanted was too steep.

Speaking of the BAR, they are almost impossible to find today. What in the hell happened to all of them after the Korean War? It's like they just disappeared. There should be thousands of them out there.

GCA in 1986. Also, it's Browning Automatic Rifle. You can find semi-auto clones though.

The M1 Garand is one awesome unique rifle. I have fired a few of them and each outing was a blast.

I'm not familiar with GCA? What does that mean?

Gun Control Act amended in 1986 by the FOPA (Firearms Owners Protection Act) that closed registration of automatic firearms after it went into law. Basically why transferable BAR's are hard to find and very expensive.

What exactly is an assault rifle?

ETA: Not going to be many of those out there. The military isn't as likely to let those got as they would be pistols or regular rifles. They weren't cheap.

I generally don't like that term either (in civilian settings anyway), but technically.

A select-fire weapon (full auto capable) in a rifle cartridge or intermediate rifle cartridge (like an AR or AK).

The new term for ARs and AKs is "modern sporting rifle" but I just like to call them "rifles" because that's what they are.

Man I would love to have one of those things. I only have a WWII M-1 Carbine I got from my Grandfather who had it since the war.

Partially correct. 30/06 ballistics of that time were 150 gr bullet at 2700 fps. Today it is 2900 fps. But it is not the power of the modern rounds that is the issue. It is the pressure curve of the modern slow powders that can damage the piston rod of the M-1 Garand. If you use the proper medium burn rate powders (IMR 4064 or 4895), you can load to modern velocities and they are fine in the Garand. Hornady makes a special 30/06 Garand load that uses the proper powders. What will damage a Garand is a modern load with the slower powders like IMR 4350 or 4831.

I wouldn't mind having a Garand and almost got one at a gunshow, but didn't for some reason. I do like my little carbine, though. Neat little gun. Got a ton of rounds.

There was a website that sold M1 Garands from the Civilian Marksmanship Program that had/has a ton of them.

I can't link because I'm at work but just look up civilian marksmanship program

LINK

The path to purchasing a CMP M1 Garand starts at the link.

I bought mine almost 20 years ago. It's still a joy to shoot, if you're interested in acquiring one, in my opinion, it's worth the hassle.

Going to be a long wait for a CMP rifle. I used to visit the South Sales Office when I lived in the area and the racks are pretty much empty. They are still working on backorders from months ago. Glad I mine when I did.

You can also buy an adjustable gas plug for about $40 and then you can shoot any production 30-06 ammo. Just put it in on the lowest setting and then shoot adjust repeat until the action cycles. That way you can set the amount of gas going to the action for any round you want. I think the M1 garand would make an excellent pig rifle.
