The new update fixes an issue with HealthKit, which prevented apps that support HealthKit from being allowed in the App Store. The problem with HealthKit first came to light shortly before the public launch of iOS 8, and Apple opted to pull all HealthKit-enabled apps from the App Store until a fix was available. Following today's update, apps that take advantage of the HealthKit API will once again be accepted into the App Store.

Update: It appears that there is an issue with iOS 8.0.1 causing cellular service to be disabled. Many early installers are reporting "No Service" messages after updating. There are also reports of problems with Touch ID.

What a giant clusterfrick everything has been since the 9/9 iPhone event not streaming. My 8.0.1 update is almost finished. I will come back to relay any issues.

to be fair to apple; they have the unenviable task of being 100% in control of the system and the update working across every device they've ever built.

with android, there are THOUSANDS of nerdy developers customizing the OS and fixing defects in the vanilla system which google quietly skims off the top and adds to updates.

apple really should consider opening up the iOS door just a crack and let developers tweak the OS.

crowd-sourcing works

True, but you live by the walled garden, you die by the walled garden.

I'll be the first to admit that I've enjoyed what apple has grown in that garden. They've made hay selling people like me a consistent, smooth, orderly experience and this has been anything but. Honestly, that's what keeps me around (and why I tolerate the limitations ) so once that's gone what's left?

Maybe they could open it up a little, maybe invite some third party developers in and have some formal UAT type testing or something.

So 8.0.1 is running with no known issues on my iPhone 5. Also look like it's just effecting OTA updates to the 6 and 6+, updating from iTunes is showing no issues.

Yeah, I'm sure they pushed out an update to 500 million devices without testing it.

Looks like the wrong build was published to the OTA update mechanism. Upgrading from iTunes is showing no issues.
