Sudden barrage of calls and texts on cell phone

Getting random calls and texts (as frequent as once a minute) on an iphone (AT&T). Extremely obnoxious and annoying. The texts just say "you called my phone" or "busy now, will text later," and stuff like that. When the "caller" leaves vms, it actually sounds like brief pocket dials. ambient noise and whatnot.
anybody experienced this? Weird as frick.
before anybody asks, I don't look at porn, so it's not from viewing shady websites.
