Fall is upon us - how much further away from the Sun are we now?

Because temperature sure has plummeted.
Who wold have thought a slight variation in the distance from the Sun would make such a change in climate?
I'm glad Earth has kept the exact same planetary orbit for the lat 5 Billion years so that we can nail down global warming to cars, weed-eaters and flatulence.

I bet 20+% of people think that's the cause of seasons.

We are actually getting closer to the sun right now, and we will be closest in early January. So, the variation in the orbit makes very little difference.
It is cooler in winter for the same reason it is cooler in the morning and evening than mid-day. A square foot of sunlight is spread over an area larger than a square foot (and so does less heating) as the angle it reaches the earth's surface changes.
All this is beside the fact that climate covers a period of time longer than a season.

Further than Australia will be in December?

It's cooler today, where I am. Climate change isn't happening!

Do you mean the Earth as a whole being further away, or our surface of the Earth being further away from the Sun relative to other parts of the Earth in this time of the year?
Cause it's both.
Cause it's both.

You mean neither.

Oh, the axis too! I'm glad that's been exactly the same for the last 5 Billion years.
Thanks for the reminder erbody

So how many miles closer to the sun raises the temp by 1 degree?

Closer in the winter and farther in the summer.

So our orbit is both a football and a basketball at the same time? How can that be?
Maybe in the first pic the orbital plane is altered just perfectly enough that, in a 2D representation, it appears circular.

Wtf? You realize the second picture is a 3/4 overhead view, don't you?

Earth's orbit is slightly oval. Something like a 4M mile diff aphelion-perihelion. But I don't think either was necessarily trying to represent that. The second was intended to represent a slightly tangential POV.
Same orbit. Different perspective.

Dig that crazy Uranus axis. I bet the agw kooks there go ape every 42 years.
