List your requirements and price range. What are you using it for? What are your must-have features? What would you like to have, but don't NEED?

Have the Surface 3 and love it, it can run anything Windows 8.1 will run, including stuff that normally runs on a corporate server. If you are looking for a work tablet it can't be beaten.

If you're looking for something to play around on you don't have to pay that much though, just get a cheap samsung.

Just picked up a Nexus 7 32gb (2013 model) on clearance from Walmart for $158. Seemed like a good deal.

And this.

I've got all 3 (Surface 3 (and I love it) as well as a Samsung 10" and a Nexus 7) and each is great depending on what you're doing.

Surface 3 is excellent as a real work machine or for personal use and it is a true laptop replacement. However, if you're heavy into gaming it's probably not ideal.

I use my Samsung 10" as a house tablet for internet, email, Google Chrome use (movies, et.), etc. I've had no problems.

My Nexus 7 works very well also and is very portable. I use it for going to work sites (I can fit it in the back pocket of my jeans) so I can pull up documents and pics on site, take geo-tagged photos with it, take notes, or slip it into my inside coat pocket in case I need it when at dinner with a client. And of course it's great with all the usual consumer stuff (email, etc).

One warning however-Google Chrome for Android keeps having problems with Tigerdroppings on threads with animated gifs--i.e. it renders large white "squares" that block part of the thread and posts. However, Android has other browsers to choose from.

It gets down to what you want to use it for and your budget. Hope this helps.

The SP3 can handle a good amount of games. I play minecraft, source games and a few other games on my original surface pro

I guess it depends - are you wanting to do more/better of what your phone does, or a more portable PC?

I know that seems like a fine distinction, but it does make a difference. I stand by my standard recommendation - Nexus 7 (2013), Kindle Fire (whatever is current) or wait until the next Nexus tablet comes out.

Mrs. Midnight has a Nexus 7 - it has been a zero regrets purchase.

The original Surface and the Surface 3 are different so I'm not sure which one you're referring to, but people have had different experiences with gaming on different versions of Surface (i.e. 1,2 or 3) usually related to heating. In some cases the claim is that there is less heating on Surface 1 or 2 compared to 3 when gaming.

With some games the Surface 3 has no issues, but with but others, like Mahjong for example, it starts heating and the fan kicks on. It's not an issue for me, I still play it, but for some people it's a bit of an issue. I've also read online from a few other users that also had heat and throttling issues with certain games but that with other games there was no issue with heating.

I'm not saying it can't do games, but that if the OP is a heavy gamer he may want to go with a true laptop or PC or at least check out if anyone has tried a specific game he's interested in on a Surface 3. Experience will also vary depending on which processor he chooses (i3/i5/i7).

That all said, the Surface 3 is an amazing machine and I have zero regrets for my purchase.

Check out the Dell Venue 8 Pro. It's runs full Windows 8.1 and you can get it for around $200. Not the best tablet but it can do anything. There are other similar tablets like it if you're interested in a windows tablet as well. Definitely don't have to shell out a ton of money on a Surface Pro to get the tablet experience on windows (although I have played with a Surface and they are awesome, just expensive).

If you want an Android tablet, I would highly recommend holding out for the rumored new 9 inch nexus tablet. Should be out in a month or two.

Let me give an example. I do client demos to show the capabilities of a large-scale ERP package (think SAP or Oracle). I installed and run this natively on my Surface 3 with an Oracle database back-end. Since it runs on an SSD it is blazingly fast, too. The main limitation is hard drive space, a megalarge client needs a bit more drive space to store data than what the Surface 3 provides. But I'm doing live demos using production software (not a mockup) supported by Oracle 12c Enterprise Edition on a fricking tablet. Not to mention Office or whatever else I want to run.
