On my kindle so no link sorry. It's in USA Today though

quote:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Senators Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., and Tim Jonson D-S.D., introduced legislation Thursday that would revoke tax-exempt status for the NFL unless the Washington team changes its name from Redskins.

"Our position remains consistent with more than 80% of Americans who do not want to change the Washington Redskins name," Tony Wyllie, a spokesman for the Washington NFL team, said Thursday.

Cantwell's office said the NFL received tax-exempt status as a not-for-profit "business league" organization and that the bill was narrowly crafted to prohibit tax-exempt status only for professional sports leagues that promote use of the term used by Washington's football team, meaning it would not affect other sports leagues, such as the NHL and PGA, which also receive the exemption.

I am sure the horribly impoverished Indians on Nevada and Washington reservations will dutifully vote for them.

Is there a bigger hack anywhere on Earth than Harry Reid? What a scumbag. I would happily do time if I could punch him in the face, just once.

Just more proof that our politicians are ignorant, grandstanding bafoons.

Every single franchise already pays taxes. The central office doesn't actually even realize revenue. In fact, last year's balance sheet had a multi billion dollar "loss" for the NFL b/c all the stadium liabilities are on those books.

Switching the NFL to non tax exempt would have a net $0 impact on tax receipts because the franchises wouldn't have to file anymore.

Though Harry Reid probably is ignorant enough to not understand that.

Goodness, how pathetically stupid is thid Nevada POS?

Is he going to target the tax status of the Fighting Irish also, or how about the Dallas Cowboys or FSU Seminoles.

These azz0s can't run the country without a deficit, but they can meddle in everyone elses business.

I doubt it would really effect anything at all, I doubt the NFL ever shows any income.

LINK

Even without the G3, which I don't think exists in this iteration of the CBA, it's pretty obvious they are collecting monies from the teams to spend on advertising and the like.

Even if you don't like the name, I don't see how this can possibly be constitutional. The intent, even if it's ineffective, is to punish the NFL for offensive speech.

The NFL doesn't post any profits (helps to pay Goodell 40 mil/yr to achieve that zero-profit goal) - so how would this change their bottom line?
