What went wrong? What stopped him?

I'll hang up and listen as I don't remember the specifics well and would like to read a discussion on the issue.

Republicans in Congress didn't have the chest for the fight.

And by the point that Bush could've actually pushed legislation, he was so damaged in the polls that he had no reserve to draw upon politically to get anything done by his lead.

The same thing that always happens when people propose reforms to social security. The opponents drummed up fear among the elderly population by alleging that this would end social security. The elderly vote more than the young. It's too easy to secure their votes by portraying reformers as radicals who want to destroy the system and that makes it extremely dangerous for anyone to tackle as a political issue.

That's why social security is called the "third rail" of American politics - touch it and you die.

George W. Bush never recovered.

If I recall he had used up about all of his political capital on the wars. That and he was immediately assaulted for wanting to starve old people.

It is a shame because it would be great to have control over at least some of that money. It would be great for the national debt in the long haul as well.

Pretty much this.

I remember like it was yesterday. He proposed a 4% option of younger workers to divert money from Soc Sec.

The Dem response was to demagogue the issue by claiming the stock market was a giant casino where you will eventually lose everything.

Depression is just around the corner and you will die in the streets. It worked.

No matter what charts or evidence one may have to the contrary SS will only see major change when its already to late.

Precisely. Any politician you talk to would admit privately that the system has to be reformed. It's just too much of a prisoner's dilemma for either side to try and do it because reform would demand bipartisanship and the other side will always decide it is better to reap the votes of today than worry about the people of tomorrow.

It's stupid - Here in Iowa Democrats are running ads saying how Joni Ernst will end social security at this very moment for everyone, which is false

The plan she supports has a 15 year grace period so anyone 55 or older would still get social security as it is now. Democrats don't want you to know that

Wouldn't it be great if one day we get a leader that can pull both sides together so that we can fix it?

It's ridiculous - the ads they run here feature old people with depressing music in the background and looking out their windows with a face like they are about to kill themselves, all depressed and gloomy

Then they look at the camera and say "If Joni Ernst is elected she will end social security and medicare. We would have to fend for ourselves. She has no heart or compassion"

It truly is fear mongering lying at its finest. First of all if you have to rely on social securtiy for your source of income after retiring you have no one to blame but yourselves. Second you would not be affected by the plan Joni supports.

If Bush couldn't pull 'both sides together' with a PATHETIC 4 per cent option, it cannot be done. What do you want? One percent? Half of one percent?

Because people didn't want to continue listening to him based on his enormously successful ideas of the previous 5 years?

Plus, "privatizing" social security is a code word for killing it.
