I used to live in my own home and I would smoke the shite outta that place in order to make a bad arse steak. I am reading recipes online right now to see how other people do it. There's no way this place won't be covered in smoke, and I have two roommates. What's the secret to getting a good sear on a cast iron skillet ribeye without smoking out the joint? I apologize if this has been discussed a lot on here. I don't venture over like I should. Y'all have some quality threads over here. Thanks.

if youre just searing it, go outside when you take the cast iron out of the oven and slap the steak on it

I have a giant sucking vent hood....it will suck ya weave right up off ya head, so I can do this inside without a problem. But if you crank up the propane jet burner used for boiling crawfish, you can get a mighty fine sear outside. Ditto for a very hot charcoal fire, but that's more time consuming to set up.

You can't

Do it on a burner outside
Or build fire in grill and put skillet in there

Yeah I get that. I have seen it done by my chef roommate, but he isn't here and of course can't talk. I'll do it outside. Just thought I would ask the board if I was missing something. Y'all can let this topic fall to the bottom. Thanks.

if youre just searing for a minute or two, take the cast iron out of the oven and just slap the steak on outside. it will hold the heat well enough by itself
