Iphone update issue

So the new update requires some free storage. If I clear my storage for Mail I would be good. I have completely cleared my MAIL account of all emails, deleted everything (Mail, Sent, Trash, etc.) but I’m still showing 3.8GBs being used by MAIL. What else can I do?
I know the obvious:
* get new phone
* throw in garbage

First off - Tech Board.
Secondly, how much free room do you have and how are you trying to update? If you use iTunes it takes a lot less storage than just updating your phone while not connected.

You don't need to free up storage if you update it through itunes on your computer.

Don't update over wifi. Update on the computer, and sync to update after. It has to download the update and then install it. You need about 5 GB of free room to do it over wifi.

If you've always updated over wifi and backup to iCloud only, you'll have a ton of "other" data clogging up your phone. I reset the phone and restored from my iCloud backup and it freed up about 5 GB. All of my pictures and data remained in tact, it just gets rid of garbage eating up your space.
Give that a try. I went from 4.2GB free to 9.6GB free.

Thanks. Yeah should have posted on tech board. Completely wasn't thinking. Anyhow I got a 16gb phone. Saying 12.5 used. 3gb on Mail, 3gb on Photo and 2gb on Music and I guess the rest is from misc apps. Funny thing is it says I only have 750mb available. So if I only used 12.5 where is my other 3.5? Anyhow,I'm gonna do it by way of iTunes on the PC. Think that's my best option. Thanks.

the issue is that if you try to do it on your phone you have to have enough space to download it. If you do it on iTunes it downloads it to the computer, your phone doesn't need the room to download it.
