He was incredible at Porto, and he looks like he's back to his old self at Zenit.

He was below par at Chelsea, and when Spurs hired him, I thought we got a steal that Chelsea gave up on too quickly. Welll Spurs struggled mightily to score goals with Gareth Bale, but once Bale left, it became obvious that AVB was not running a system that could do any damage. Spurs were not only struggling against the big clubs. They were barely scoring against the teams on the brink of relegation.

Now I see him killing it at Zenit, and I just don't understand. They have 7 wins in 7 games in the Russian Premier League, and they just beat Benfica 2-0 yesterday in the Champions League.

What is it about his style that didn't adapt to the Premier League? Zenit looks nothing like Spurs or even Chelsea did under AVB. It doesn't look like the same manager at all. It baffles me.

He's got a pretty massive talent advantage in Russia. The Benfica result was helped by a sending off for Benfica's keeper early in the first half.

As long as they don't sign black players.

I think he's too stubborn, in regards to his system... He will force it on players even if it doesn't fit his personnel...

I think Chelsea was too soon too fast and he didn't have the control there, that he probably thought he did..

Like you, I would have been happy with AVB the summer we hired BR... Glad we didn't.

He's still young and can learn from his mistakes.. he may end up being a great manager one day, at a big club (in a better league than the Russian one)

edit: I remember thinking that him insisting on playing that high line against us, last year, was suicidal... It was kinda painful, like watching that movie tin cup, where you just wanted to say "lay up" but he was too stubborn... I almost felt bad for him.. I think that was his last game, if memory serves..

I edited my original post with an additional thought...

BR turned out great, but I'll admit I wasn't so sure at the time...

He is still young and learning (see CPFC last season, for one example), but at least he shows a willingness to change and adapt... hope he's here for the long term..

So the same coach goes from good to bad to good again, vice versa. Maybe people just overestimate the role the manager has on the team.

you missed another bad in between the two goods...

Also, I think it may depend on what level of control they have over transfers, etc.. Some managers are given players and told to make it work on the field... some have more control over who is brought in..

AVB walked into a pretty good situation at Zenit.

They were already a consistently good side (winning Russian league and getting out of CL group stage here and there) and have been so for a while.

Even better for AVB, they had little changes from a squad that has been playing a very similar fluid attacking game under Spalletti for 3 or 4 years.

Their main problem had been defense and they addressed that pretty well in buying Javi Garcia and Ezequiel Garay this summer.
