I've got several meniscal cysts and a torn lateral meniscus on the left knee per MRI. After 17 years of on and off pain sometimes for months at a time and now pain with running it was time to do something.

The referral is in to the ortho but I'm wondering if anyone has ever had this and what perhaps to expect. Seems like from what I'm reading aspiration and possibly steroid injection does the trick but does the meniscus HAVE to be fixed?

YES, I'll ask the doc and NO I'm not looking for medical advice ... just curious if anyone's had this and how it was handled for you.

If the meniscus is torn then yes it must be fixed because it won't heal itself. The meniscus acts as a shock absorbant between the tibia and femur. If it's torn those two bones rub together causing a click or catch.

Well the kicker is that I have a torn meniscus laterally on the OTHER knee as well that the ortho I saw for a 2nd opinion was a runner and he said if it's "ok" taped when I run it was ok. That it would let me know when it was time.

SO if they BOTH need to be fixed can that be done at the same time? I'd think not BUT my ded is met this year ... guess I may have decisions to make once I can see the doc. But that may be 3 weeks as the guy I want is out of town until October 7.

Having both fixed at the same time won't be a problem. If you have to have knee surgery the meniscus is the one you want to have

My concern is that 10 years ago I was having severe knee pain when kneeling ... exhausted PT and antiimflammatory meds etc. Ended up with MRI that said torn meniscus ... surgery revealed no torn meniscus BUT they cleaned out some infected tissue to the best of my recollection.

I'm kinda scared ... and how long will I be out from running? Yes, I will ask these questions also to the Ortho.

Are you a PT or did you sleep at a Holiday Inn?

Meniscus could be anywhere from 4-12 weeks depending on how much they have to repair

I have had a meniscal cyst, and I doubt what you are saying. I am going to check your story with a friend of mine who is an M.D.

torn lateral meniscus on the left knee
Two options, both orthoscopic:

1) If the tear is on the thin/inner part of the meniscus, the doc will just shave it down. Not enough blood gets to that area so they can't sew it up and wait for it to heal. This is almost preferred since you don't have to wait for the meniscus to heal. Your rehab is just 4-6 weeks just to recovery from surgery in general

2) if the tear is in the thicker/outer part, they'll repair the tear. This takes much longer because you have to wait for the repair to heal, then you rehab. This is 4-6 months instead.

I was lucky and had the first one. I was a catcher throughout high school and going into college. Got moved to outfield, and the standing around after running whether on the bases or after a fly ball killed me. As a catcher, I kept moving so much I never felt it during a game. Always had to ice post game though. CSB.

Had the same thing last year. The tear won't fix itself and will likely only get worse. I put it off to the point that it got unstable. Had a cyst too. Had surgery Dec 5th last year and was full blast by mid January. Recovery time will vary widely. Just depends on what you want to do and how bad your tear is. Also don't expect miracles. Mine still bothers me from time to time. Nothing bad just will get tender for a day or so if I move wrong or something. Where its most noticeable is going up stairs.

Well considering I'm female, yes at times I do if you must know.

Thanks to the others ... it's lateral and I actually have a lateral tear in BOTH knees. Adam Perry is the guy who can see me first and I've heard good things so I'll be optimistic.

I'm ok USUALLY (flares up from time to time -- it's bad when it does) except when it comes to running ... the outside always is tender due to the cysts and I can deal with that but to run it sucks. And I'm signed up for a half for St. Jude's in December that I've raised money for; a full in January and a half in March. Guessing the full is out and the next half is super iffy.

Appreciate it .. hoping they can drain the cyst and fix it right after the half in December -- hopefully he'll give me this option.
