I am picking up my new 17.5’ aluminum side console boat on Saturday. This is my first boat and I am fairly new to boating/fishing. What kind of things should I consider when trying to choose between different trolling motors? And do you have any recommendations?

Thanks in advance

Update:

I wound up buying the Minn Kota Riptide SP 55# with co-pilot on Monday. I mounted it and installed it on Monday as well. On Tuesday, I took it out to Shell Beach/Hopedale to test it out. It was awesome! No issues. I fished in the front chair and had a buddy on the back chair, and being able to steer/control the motor with the remote without having to get up was great. I was able to keep one hand on the fishing pole and another on the beer.

I appreciate everyone's input. Thanks.

I would go with a 24 volt system, 70-80# thrust. (Rule of thumb is 5 lbs of thrust for every 200 lbs of weight.) Shop around!

Not sure of their salt water line, but I bought a bass pro Prowler hand tiller trolling motor for my freshwater alum hull. It's quality and features were better than a comparable Minn Kota or Motorguide and the price was better.

$0.02.

I hadn't picked it up yet but this is the factory pictures:

I have seen it in person but the only initial mod they are making at the dealer is upgrading the alum prop to a stainless steel one.

I have had both, and they will both get the job done. Had MG on my tin rig and never had an issue on the new boat it came with a MK fourtrex and its nice as well.

On my 17.5ft tin rig i use to have, we went with a hand controlled because the front deck was crowded and it was nice not having a large foot pedal on the deck.

Also i had a 54lb 12V on my H51 Xpress and it handled the job well. If you are going to fish alot of open water and fight the wind a good bit i would go with a 24V 70lb range TM.

Thanks for everyone's advice.

That iPilot does look tempting.

I guess I will wait to get the boat in the water to see what shaft length I will need.

Fished with a co-pilot before, and that was pretty nice. But the GPS seems to take it to the next level.

I'm pretty jealous watching guys pull up to rigs and just drop the trolling motor and not have to anchor. And if you want to change spots, it's much easier to troll around and lock it on to another spot than it is to pull anchor and anchor again wherever you want to go. Also handy for locking in right down current of a rig.

Basically, screw an anchor.

You can do the same with inshore structure.

My next TM will be an i-pilot.

You can also set it to follow a bank. They are nice.

You said fishing out of Shell Beach. There are a lot of rigs within reach of there. But even fishing a point or cut in the marsh, it seems to be pretty Cadillac.

And like someone else said, you can set it to follow a bank. And you can set it to follow previous paths, which is nice.

I have a similar boat, and run a 24 volt, 74lb thrust MK Maxxum. When crank it up WOT it will fly, can run 2-3 days without needing a charge. That being said, I would say no smaller than 74. If you have the room for it look into the smaller 36v systems. Look into used and save some $, I bought a slightly used 2 yo model for just under half of retail.

ETA: Grats on the boat

I have the same sort of question... Unfortunately I just inherited a boat from my FIL who passed last week. My MIL is basically making me take it. It's a 17.5 aquasport osprey cc (2000) with a 90 etec (2010) on the back. I'd be willing to bet it has less than 20hrs on the motor.
He didn't have a trolling motor on it and I need to get one for this duck season.... Also looking into a power pole as well.
Please spare me the Yamaha stuff
If I were buying one that's what it would have, but it's free...
