Forgive me for being electronically retarded....

Looking to hook up generator to the house so when the power goes off, I can hit the generator and can run a few appliances, fridge maybe a few other things and I can turn on the fans. We have a natural gas hookup for my grill and I know that some of the Honda 3000IS can be hooked up to that type of connection. Is there any other options between hooking it up to nat gas or reg ol gasoline that isn't over $3k? Grandfather has a Honda 3000 that's wired into the house and I believe he paid around $3k for it all. I know Honda is good quality, any other recommendation for something cheaper?

You could make a suicide cord and backfeed through an outlet. Probably not the best idea if you have kids or a dingy wife though. I

Using a portable generator as a backup is somewhat dicey, anyway. Lots of people do it. What I would recommend is to spend a little bit of money and get an electrician to set up the input side, perhaps with some surge and voltage regulation. Right size your generator to the load you want to carry in an emergency - flip all the breakers off that you don't want to run and manually switch over to generator power.

If you don't want to do that, there are plenty of DIY youtube videos, but none are particularly safe. I think the best option is whole house, natural gas (or LP, if necessary) standby generator is the way to go, but those setups are $5k to $10k (and more).

if power is returned and you're using this "suicide cord", what happens to the generator?

You cut off power to the meter. You don't want to be backfeeding the lines anyways. That could get you in some serious trouble.

I think that's how my grandfathers is hooked up. Not 100% tho. Just gona get an electrician to give me an idea of what would work. I hate deciding on shite that I know nothing about.

You have to turn the main breaker off while feeding the house.

If you don't you might kill a linemen. It works well but you shouldn't try it if you don't 100% understand what's going on.

You can talk to an electrician and have him wire you up a box outside with a plug and breakers. Either way there will be the risk of exposed energized prongs if you don't flip the right breakers or plug stuff in in the right order.

Me too, brother. Because they can tell you anything, and you won't know, right?

"Oh. I can do it, but it will cost you $56,000."

I've rigged it up many times by just turning off the main breaker and hooking a plug from the generator to romex, and then into a breaker that I plug into the panel. Then, shut off anything you aren't using and keep on the breakers you are. Illegal, yes. Works, yes.

When the power to your hood comes back on, take the breaker out and flip the main back on

To do it right used a disconnect switch between the Meter and Breaker box "DO NOT JUST TURN THE BREAKER OFF!" some older houses only switch one lead off. Which will send power down the line to personal working on the down line.

seems like every storm, we hear about somebody getting hurt (lineman) from stuff like this.

I'd be real particular.

if you are hooking up to the house you need to throw the main breaker to your meter in order to not backfeed out to the power grid...I have an older home and have a 220 outlet I have made a cord for (suicide cord = both ends have male plugs on them) you have to make sure you make it correctly and not be feeding 110 to the neutral...mine runs the whole home with a room AC and ceiling fans keeping the house cool...runs everything else... depending on how much juice your generator puts out you can overload it by turning on a microwave or using a hi wattage hair dryer...but the fridge freezer pc's tv's every outlet in the home is hot...just make sure you turn off what you are not using at the time...

forgot to add that I've replaced the old meter panel with a new Square D 200 amp with a main disconnect...again like noted above...if you don't absolutely know what you are doing don't do it...

If you are going to do it, do it right the first time.
I'd recommend a Generator Transfer switch.
