no...unless you get a great deal on it. what do you have now?

i wont steal 'ilike's' thunder because he's the resident expert but i'd opt for a good N with a great antenna.

AC needs to settle down a bit and even then its probably going to be another year or 2 before devices even start incorporating that.

when ilike posts in here, take his word on what to get.

yep, just checked it again and the coupon code still works

quote:

Just checked out today's Newegg email, and they have the ASUS AC56 for $80 with promo code EMCPAWH92. That's $10 cheaper than the N56, but you can get a free wireless bridge with the N56 with promo code EMCPAWH58.

Might as well go for that, then. As I said in the other thread, it's not going to perform like much of an AC router even with AC clients, unless you're within a close range. However, all of the N900s worth having are over $100, and the N600s are hovering in the $70-80 range. The newer, super-duper-powerful AC routers with 4x4 MU-MIMO should push the price of the lesser AC routers down to a level competitive with N900s. Eventually, deals like the one for the ASUS will be more common, and it'll make sense to get an AC router whether you have the adapters for it or not.

It will be another year or two before every new wifi-enabled device you buy will have 802.11ac, and it still only matters if you're using those devices to access files on your local network. If everything connected to your router is just fighting over your broadband connection, then your current router might be overkill as it is. The main concern would just be range, or far can your weakest device stray from the router before its throughput drops noticeably below your available broadband speed.

i have a 3000ft house. its a box, essentially so lets say 1500 downstairs & 1500 up.

router sits in center downstairs against, lets say..the east wall.

my son's alienware is upstairs, lets say far corner (northwest).

right now he's using 'powered' ethernet connection due to poor performance from our crappy n router.

i'm wondering if the gigabit ethernet port on the new router will have any impact on his speeds.

Just a spare Linksys WRT54. Been too lazy to get a decent router, but when I do get one, I'd rather not get one that's obsolete tomorrow.

Your old router was only 10/100 ethernet?

It probably wont make a difference in broadband, unless the shitty router had really bad WAN to LAN throughput to begin with (as in, lower than your internet speed)

JGG..quick FAQ as to what Merlin is and why you'd want it on your ASUS router:

quote:

The goal with this project is to provide an alternative to Asuswrt which will benefit from the same rapid development as Asus have for this firmware. This means there are some very strict design goals with this project:

Stay as close as possible to the original firmware. By limiting the amount of sweeping changes made to the code, it means that whenever Asus releases a new version of Asuswrt, it only takes a few hours to re-base Asuswrt-merlin on this new code, and test it.

The goal is to improve, not to replace the original firmware's functionality Projects like DD-WRT and Tomato have existed for years, and benefit from those years of development to offer a lot of new features. There is no point in reinventing the wheel - people looking for a completely different firmware with tons of advanced features should look at those excellent and well-established projects.

Priorities: Stability > performance > features. Fewer changes to the code means fewer chances that new bugs might be introduced. A router firmware is the core of your home network. It must be rock-stable above all. And performance optimizations can have unexpected side-effect when dealing with things that aren't fully understood.

Targeting the novice and average user. Asuswrt is designed to target both the novice and the average users. This project will aim at the same target userbase. There is enough doors left open with Optware and user-scripts so advanced users can fulfill their own requirements themselves. Not overcrowding the webui with esoteric features will ensure that novice users won't be scared away.

So recommend me something around `50ish that will give me good range performance with around 25Mbps down (50 when Cox doubles).

I saw this. Linksys EA6300 AC

and Linksys EA3500 N750

any other suggestions would be amazing.
