I am looking for a new bow. I am a noob when it comes to compound bows. My dad bought me a crossbow growing up so that is what I used. I want to get into now hunting but I don't want to break the bank. I'm willing to go the used route for a better bow. Best place to look for a used bow? LA Sportsman? My budget is $300-400

Found a diamond outlaw on sportsman. Is this a decent beginner bow?

LINK classifieds. You can get a higher quality used bow for a good price, just about anything you want. Go to a shop and shoot what they have, figure out what you want. Then search for it on AT. I picked up a NewBreed Genetix over the Elite Hunter. But it's all about personal preference. Make sure the shop gives you your draw length so you know what to look for if you buy used.

go to a couple bow shops and shoot different models and see what you like. then look for a used one on sportsman or eBay. Dont buy strickly on brand, All my life I wanted a matthews, went and shot a bunch of different brands and fell in love with bowtech.

You will probably be in this for the long haul so just bite the bullet and get a new bow and set it up with the equipment you like. Mathews. If you don't then you will wind up spending more money eventually.

Nothing wrong with buying used, but I would only buy off archerytalk. They have fair prices and tons of used bows. I would either buy a switchback or elite gt500, probably the elite. Both bows are considered to be two of the better hunting bows ever made. Both can be purchased for under $400.

Don't go cheap on your accesories. At least buy a quality sight and rest

That used to be the case, but not anymore. All of the bow companies make great bows, it's a matter of finding what you like best.

I was a huge Mathews fan, but I just made the switch to an Obsession Evolution. It's as smooth drawing as anything in the Mathews lineup and is the quietest and deadest bow I've ever shot. On top of that it manages 325 FPS (with a legitimate hunting arrow and a peep, loop, and Bowjax string silencers on the string) at 65lbs of draw weight, a huge valley, and a measured 82% let off.

I did keep my Switchback XT as a backup. If I was looking to buy used the Switchback or SBXT would be where I'd start. As Rebman said, a used Elite would be another bow to check out. The Elites (as well as Obsessions) have a transferable warranty, whereas most others (Mathews, Hoyt, PSE, Bowtech) do not.

Here's a great example of the deals you can find on Archerytalk. It's a little more out of the OP's range, but would make a great setup for someone looking to get a great hunting bow at a steal of a price

I've been wanting to shoot an obsession, heard nothing but good things. I shoot a chill now, but like you said there are several companies that make bows just as good as Mathews nowadays.

I've really been wanting an elite. Not a big fan of the snow camp though.

The only downside to the Obsessions right now is the long wait times. They really messed up offering all of the color options with no upcharge. If you get a chance to shoot one you won't be disappointed.

The Xpedition Xcentrics are awesome bows too. They have the same basic riser and limb design as the Evolutions, but use a Hybrid Cam system instead of Binarys. The only thing I didn't like about them is that they don't have an insert for a riser mount quiver.

I really like the way the Chills shoot too. Have you tried the rock mods on yours?
