I don't know if this was really Obama's motive or not, but it makes sense.

quote:

In his speech to the American people last night outlining his strategy (finally!) for combating ISIL, President Obama made a statement which has been cited as an example of his stupidity, ignorance, treason, or deceit: ISIL is not Islamic. No religion condones the killing of innocents, and the vast majority of ISIL’s victims have been Muslim.

How can ISIL not be “Islamic” when Islamic is the first word in the acronym? Twitchy gives a short round up of some of the Twitter reactions to this statement, which are overwhelmingly negative.
This rhetoric is not a sign of cowardliness. It is a sign that the war on terror is–at its core–public relations work.Whatever you might think of Obama, he is intelligent. He understands quite well that ISIL presents itself and believes itself to be the true followers of Islam on a divinely ordained mission to create an Islamic State. So then is he lying?

I believe the simplest and most accurate answer is: No. He’s simply choosing a definition of Islam that he knows will reduce terrorist recruitment and damage ISIL’s rhetoric. There is nothing that ISIL would like more than to see Western powers, particularly the US, openly declare war on Islam. And whatever you think about Islam, it’s not hard to see why this would be such a successful recruitment tool. If you believe every superpower in the world is out to destroy your people, it suddenly becomes a lot easier to justify horrific acts of violence. Obviously these acts are never justified. But it’s easier for the radicalized Muslim to imagine they’re so when believing that nearly the entire world is bent on slaughtering him and his family.

This is exactly the narrative sold in terrorist propaganda: The US/West is out to kill Muslims and steal their lands and goods. This is why Bush famously (or infamously, in some circles) called Islam a “religion of peace.” Arguing such tactics don’t follow true Islam delegitimizes the motives for Islamic terrorism. This PR strategy is so effective that Bin Laden considered changing his organization’s name to escape it.

It does make sense, but does having the POTUS call you a different name really affect your recruiting ability? Did the Ohio State coach that called michigan the school up north really have an affect on michigan?

This is simply over analyzed. Obama is Muslim and that's why he says a does what he does.

Great. The President doesn't speak to the American people. He uses major speeches as anti-recruiting propaganda platforms for worldwide Muslims. fricking awesome.

Of course. A president of The United States denouncing Islam would be about the single most destructive thing to our counter-terrorism efforts he could say. This is an expectation of retards.

If his goal was to differentiate between run of the mill Muslims and ISIS, he should have done it without making such a broad, idiotic statement as to say that ISIS is not Islamic.

There are any number of ways he could have done so and not caused a tire fire.

Too smart by half.

It really seems like a reasonable statement on its face. Even without this particular POV, i find the statement to be perfectly reasonable and understandable.

Whenever a Christian zealot would kill an abortion doctor....or, when westboro church makes an arse of itself...I would be willing to say "that is not Christians" even though they clearly fit the definition.

The statement is plain that it does not represent the essence and mainstream of Christianity.

having said THAT:

frick ISIS/ISIL

frick Islam

And, I am no lapdog of this dishonest, disingenuous administration, either

So why characterize them at all? What compelled him to say that ISIS wasn't Islamic instead of saying nothing specific about them? No one forced him to bring up the religious aspect but himself.

Like the prof said, we can't let ISIS turn this into a West vs Islam war. It's not enough to not denounce Islam IMO. He has to be proactive. Whether you agree with saying that or not, I do think it's an attempt to appeal to Muslims, not him being a pussy, or an appeaser, or whatever people believe about him.

So, what would Obama call the Muslim Brotherhood? I don't recall him saying they were a bunch of violent imposters.
