What is the point of the CC security code if online merchants require it?

Now that everyone is asking for the 3 digit code, can't it be compromised as readily as the entire CC number if a site is hacked?

Sure, but I guess the logic is that if all I have is the CC number and name, I wouldn't be able to fill in that field online would I?

True.

I assume after some period of time passes we will have a 2nd '3 digit security code on the back.'

when someone pays me over the phone, my merchant recquires CC#, EXp, CCV#, billing zip. Always seemed like a lot to give out.

It's pretty easy to guess a 16 digit number that matches a valid cc...it's more difficult to match a 16 digit number with a corresponding 4 digit expiration...it's exponentially more difficult to randomly match the first two with an additional three digit number.
