Baton Rouge has been awarded a $1.8 million federal transportation grant to study plans to develop a high-capacity transit system along Nicholson Drive to better connect LSU and downtown.

U.S. Sens. Mary Landrieu and David Vitter announced the grant award Tuesday. The money is being allocated from the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery, or TIGER, Grant Program.
There has been discussion about developing a streetcar line between LSU and downtown, because of all the large-scale construction projects either underway or slated to begin. Those include the IBM Service Center downtown, the Water Campus coastal research center and the River District mixed-use development. More than 3,700 housing units, from condominiums in the River District to new residential units at LSU, are either under construction on the drawing board. More than 2 million square feet of commercial and office space also is in the works.
While the streetcar line has received much of the attention, Fregonese said other transit systems could be used along Nicholson, such as expanded CATS service or a bus-rapid transit system that combines the efficiency of streetcars with the flexibility of buses.
Mayor-President Kip Holden and LSU President and Chancellor F. King Alexander said the grant will benefit LSU and downtown.
“This generous grant will help LSU’s own redevelopment program focused on connecting students with the larger community,” Alexander said.

The first component of the Water Campus, a 33-acre center for coastal education and research between downtown and LSU, will go before the City-Parish Planning Commission in October.
Plans to rezone a 2-acre section to allow the construction of a four-story, 65,000-square-foot building at 510 Oklahoma St. were submitted to the Planning Commission. They will be up for approval at the organization’s Oct. 20 meeting. The building will be the headquarters for the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority. The CPRA is a state agency that is responsible for coastal restoration and protection projects and planning in Louisiana.
The CPRA building is one of three properties in the first phase of the Water Campus, along with the headquarters for the Water Institute of the Gulf and the River Modeling Center, which will have a small-scale model of the Mississippi River. All three properties are set to open in 2016.

BR needs a streetcar from state capital LSU, actually all the way to brightside. It also need BRT lines from the MOL down perkins cut over Acadian Thruway and then down Plank Rd to the airport. It also needs a BRT line down florida from the river to the Cortana mall.

One of the reasons for narrowing government street to 3 lanes is to allow for a streetcar line to run down government street from the river center and casinos to brcc and independence park (with a possible extension to cortana in the future).
This would allow the nicholson street car to intersect it downtown, connecting midcity and lsu, and would intersect with the proposed passenger train station on government that would connect Baton Rouge with New Orleans.

I would put in a BRT line there and not streetcar. Same benefits 1/3rd of the price. The nicholson line needs to be a streetcar because that would be awesome looking outside TS.
