Say you have to choose one of the two options

1) changing the rules of the game to limit the effects of head injuries

2) keeping the rules as they are - but limit career lengths in the NFL to reduce the likelihoods of lifelong head injuries.

What do you go with?

The way I see it - if everything stays the same - the NFL will go with 1) - gradually changing the rules of the game until it is flag football. I prefer 2).

EDIT - 2) - or any other methods of reducing exposure to the game that doesn't involve changing the rules - like allowing players to only play X of 16 games, and increasing the roster sizes to compensate. X would be the smallest for running backs - X=16 for place kickers.

As a federalist...

As most on the poli board are...

I say let the team decide and not make the whole league undergo such mandates!

As a republican...

As most posters on the poli board...

I say only the best players should wear helmets to weed out the bad players by giving them head injuries!

As a centrist...

As most posters here on the poli board claim to be...

Each situation should be looked at objectively. Was it actually the ball carrier's fault he got knocked out?

As a democrat...

As no one on the poliboard is...

I say that both should be mandated, and after a bad collision, the players are required to write apologies to each other.

Traumatic brain injury isn't really a laughing matter.

Impossible. It is a violent collision sport.

And its your honest opinion that the number of collisions is completely irrelevant?

I think its unnecessary to change the game. People make decisions to play it. At most I'd say limit time in the league but even then that's pushing it. Suggest a time limit and tell players they forfeit any legal rights to sue if they play beyond it.

I think that's reasonable. That's a de-facto time limit.

When I was in high school the mantra was "if it doesn't kill you, it makes you stronger." - thought to be fair - the idea that banging yourself into other people repeatedly isn't so good isn't anything new - is common sense - BUT - I think as far as the head goes, though, most guys just figured worse case is it would make them a little dumb - they didn't figure it would mean they might go fricking wacko and kill themselves. The stakes are higher than people thought.

Ultimately the NFL will seek to protect itself from liability - as it should. I think doing so in the way of limiting career lengths and/or game time would be more productive than rule changes in the long run.

CONSIDER THIS - it has actually been proposed that the KICKOFF be eliminated
and replaced with either a 1st down at their own 20 for the former 'receiving team' - or a 4th and 15 at their own 20 for the former 'kicking team'. That's a LOT fricking dumber than limiting career lengths and/or limiting number of games per player per season

What if the teams they play for compensate them handsomely for taking such high risks?

Oh . . .wait.

Here is the issue that many people don't seem to realize.

These dangers are not just seen in the pro game. They can also be seen in kids who play in high school and college.

There are definite cognitive changes that occur and definite personality changes that occur.

So, here is what people don't seem to be thinking. Are parents going to want their kids playing football? I will be honest. If I ever have kids, there is absolutely no way he will be allowed to play football.

The damage is not only done by concussions but by the repetitive hits that occur in games and practice.

So, over time as the dangers of football become more and more obvious, will schools be able to actually field teams? Why would they ever field a team that is proven to damage and injure their players permanently?

So I would suspect that high schools at some point in the next 10-20 years no longer field football teams. Without all of these athletes playing football, I would suspect that interest in the nfl slowly subsides over the next 50 or so years.

If kids aren't playing it, then what will they be playing? Well anything else. Soccer is getting more and more popular. Interestingly enough, heading the ball in soccer also has been shown to cause brain injury...

Require all players to sign a waiver and then let them decide how long they want to play. Individuals can make their own decisions without a nanny state government telling them how to live their lives.

This is really dumb. Many, many parents are not as reactionary as you. My 3 brothers and I were highly encouraged to play football. We all played through high school and I had two brothers play college football. No long-term cognitive damage. We are all exceptionally bright and have advanced far in each of our respective fields. Our case is not unique. I even had a number of injuries, including breaking most of my fingers at one time or another, breaking my collarbone, cracking an ankle, spraining my knee and both ankles, etc. My dad still wanted me to try playing college football at a tiny school somewhere (I was not good enough to even do that, he was just delusional).

I won't force my kids to play football, but I will highly encourage it. So many great memories. I even loved practice.
