stupid question about unlocking my iphone with AT&T

selling my iphone 5 back to gazelle and they said to have it unlocked for free through AT&T and I will get an extra $40 for it.
seems easy but my question is, will my phone still be able to work after AT&T approves the unlocking? they said it takes 5 business days and the new iphone wont be out until late Sept

Yes, it will still work. It will just make the phone capable of working on other networks as well.
