This could mean a difference of up to like $14B in fine exposure for BP. The only way I saw it going any other way was if the judge was corrupt. Lying about the flow rate is pretty much all I needed to hear.

Selling meth to a child is a profit-driven decision, too.

Read something a couple days ago that Halliburton settled for like $1.1 billion. Looks like a lot of this is finally coming to an end.

I doubt this will come to an end for the next 10-20 years.

I doubt it will last 20 years but I could see it going another 10. Claims are starting to be paid again

You are right it’s a company not a charity but there are 2 major items that BP was willing to take risk on – the first are the deaths of 11 men, the second is the risk of well failure based on changes from what subcontractors proposed to seal well (Transocean is also at fault for a non functional BOP). If BP does not do a proper risk assessment and we have a Macondo they are liable – if they are a risk adverse company and do a proper risk assessment none of this happens. Its all part of business – just as the fine for being negligent is

BTW I hope there are management at BP and Transocean have troubling sleeping at night over what happened …………. The money is the least of the concerns

Those decisions were in breach of standard practices. Short version...BP knowingly cut corners, creating unreasonably dangerous conditions, for the sake of greater profit. It's as close to intentional injury (murder, in this instance) as one can get. "Gross negligence" is acting with basically no regard for the safety of others. Bad shite.

I'm not sure if it is included in this ruling or not. I only got through about 60 pages of the Findings and Conclusions today, but it has been covered:
