I think it would be cool to travel the Mississippi river by home made barge.

quote:

Its like a tale from Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer, in the Mark Twain book “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” where they sought freedom and refuge when they decided to make raft and float down the river. We plan on replicating this tremendous journey on a homemade raft, floating 1,847 miles down the Mississippi River from Stillwater, MN to the Gulf of Mexico.

BUT WHY?

This trip gives us a great opportunity to build something we are proud of and build it well. The satisfaction of seeing the finished product of something you’ve built with your own two hands is something not many people our age are feeling these days. Most things we need or want can be delivered or obtained with the press of a button or swipe of a card, where the sense of working for reward is just not there. We intend to gather our own supplies, design and build our vessel, navigate the river and survive by ourselves with only the bare essentials and our own two hands. But don’t get us wrong, the main goal of this trip (successful or not) is to have fun! Hopefully we will inspire others to think beyond their comfort zone and do something they can tell their grandkids about!

ADVENTURE OVERVIEW

Stillwater, MN to the Gulf of Mexico

•2 Barrel Raft Boys & 1 Barrel Raft Dog

•16 Polyurethane 55-gallon Barrels

•26 Locks and Dams

•1,847 Miles of Mississippi River

•1.2 Miles Per Hour (Average Surface Speed)

•10 States

•Many Great Experiences

Would love to do something like this

ETA: Of course, I'd need a barge big enough to hold all the beer, and enough Yeti's to keep them cold. Unless I made frequent stops.

Hopefully they don't pass through until Monday so I can see it.

Man it is gonna be a whole new ballgame for them after they get downstream of the 190 bridge. Its all barge traffic above that, below is where the deep-draft channel begins and the big ships can throw some BIG wakes.

Maybe it's cuz my dad grew up in the barracks and was always fricking off by the river. That's one body of water I will not frick with. Besides fishing downriver.

Spent a lot of summers fishing the banks of the river and saw several similar type floats come down. One was two guys in nothing more than a floating deck with an outhouse. always thought it would be fun to do for maybe a week or two

For $1500 the raft can be yours

Guess they don't want to take it back up river.

Can't get the link to work on mobile but it's in Nola's Craigslist

shite, baking in the summer sun, damn right I would want some shade, also not having a motor would be damn near crazy once they got to BR as stated before, especially if at night.
