At what point in your life did you accept being 'average'?

I've always had somewhat of an addictive personality but usually channel it through productive things/hobbies. The downside is I have a habit of committing 100% of my time and energy into things until it becomes a crutch.

For example, I used to workout a lot until I got to a point I was full on bodybuilder, diet, strict routine, etc. A few years ago I started jogging and within a year I was training and running marathons always striving to one up my personal best. I recently started playing golf again and find myself playing or going to the range 4-5 times a week.

The older I get I just sort of admire people that can be happy being average and it doesn't bother them to be a little chubby, out of shape, shoot a bad round of golf, or just not worry about it. It's human nature obviously to always want to improve, but at what age or point in your life did you just say f*** it and accept mediocrity? Does being like that eat at you at all?

Anyway...looking forward to some tl;dr responses

So you're a bodybuilder, marathon runner, and golf pro. I'd say that's pretty average for the OT

I have more shite to worry about that these things. I would rather excel at my career than at working out and playing weekend golf.

Not everyone has your definition of mediocre.

I'm not there yet. I do the same thing you're talking about. I can't just 'do' hobbies/sports. I throw myself fully into them. It's draining and not fun. I'm a cyclist and train my arse off. And I'm mediocre, at best. I guess I'll have to strive for average.

At work, professionally, I do the same thing. But it's becoming apparent that I won't always be moving upwards. How do people settle into a job for decades?? I can't imagine doing what I'm doing now day-in and day-out forever. There has to be more to life than this. And I make very good money and I'm not overburdened. Just can't settle.

I didn't say I was exceptional or 'pro' at any of these things. Just stuff I find myself committing my time to. Not bragging. Actually, trying to figure out a way to break that addictive habit.

Exactly

Those things don't matter the least in the long run - no pun intended. I'd rather be great at my job & work on being the best husband and father I can be rather than see how many times I can throw up 300 lbs. on the bench.

There's a better way to ask for advice than calling everyone mediocre.

Unless you won competitions, won tournaments, or won marathons, you are well below "average".

Sorry, man.

Its not having what you want
It's wanting what you've got

I have always been extremely confident and content with my underachieving/mediocrity in all aspects of life. It's a state of mind that can't be taught, you're born with it.
