Why do spread teams get away with Linemen down-field?

I noticed this a good bit over the weekend that zone read teams almost always have ineligible players 3-4 yards down field that never gets called.

Auburn got away with a pretty bad one on the go ahead TD in the iron bowl

It is a pretty huge advantage that is being given as refs are calling it now. It is a lot easier to run play action when you are run blocking

i'd say 63 is just past the 3 yard line

Louisville got called for way less last night. Which is what sparked this thread

The center and left guard are both downfield.

Left guard was 4 yards downfield.... On the other hand, that ballboy sure was fast!

The center was easily down field. Could have easily called holding on both WRS on the opposite side considering they were run blocking on a pass.

I thought you only had to be across the neutral zone for it to be a penalty.

Not if its a tackle-eligible play.

it is three yard and you are suppose to be engaged on block.

Meh. It's a lot like holding, it's given some leeway if the play lasts a long time like that one did and if it isn't a screen of some sort.

The FB is the one is insanely far down the field, which to the best of my knowledge isn't illegal as the linebacker actively engaged him.

I haven't specifically looked for this, but a lot of those zone reads that turn into dump passes seem to be when lineman escape unnoticed downfield.

You can pretty clearly see two of the OL for Auburn close or past the 3 yard allowance.

Refs don't seem to be looking for it, or it maybe it catches them off guard.

A fullback is an eligible receiver and can go wherever he wants

fair enough, especially since there isn't enough data (particularly in my own thread) to have fair judgement. It is something to look out for though
