Flying with firearms (checked baggage)

Disclaimer to TSA/NSA/FBI/CIA: I am inquiring to those knowledgeable about legal methods and experiences of flying on commercial airlines with firearms in checked baggage. Nothing to see here.
Who has flown with firearms? I have a trip to Virginia for a dove hunt and I am nervous. I have a very nice hard sided case for my two shotguns and have read all of the "how to's" and TSA regulations. I will have a lock and declare the contents to the check in attendant.
What are some nuances I needed to be aware of? My fear is 1) My bag gets held up somewhere and they want to look in it but I can't be found (already on the plane or whatever) and my case gets left behind
2) I just don't like the idea of it being on the baggage claim for anyone to pick up. I will of course be running towards it to be sure I am first in line to pick up my case, but damn it just makes me nervous due to possible theft.
3) Someone calm me down. This is expensive stuff here.

People do it thousands of times each day. Calm down kid.
I've flown internationally with firearms. It's not a big deal. Now coming back through customs from an international flight is a big deal.

Timely thread.
I might be going to Arizona to dove hunt later in the year and wondered if it made more sense to fly with my shotgun or ship it via FedEx to my buddy's house out there.

Every time I travel with a rifle i alway had to pick it up at the baggage claim desk. I wouldn't think they would place a gun on the baggage claim belt.

Do you have to install a TSA approved lock on the case? In other words, do the airline workers open the case after the gun is checked at the desk?

Pretty easy. Ive done it quite a bit. 9 times out of 10 you have to pick up at the baggage claim office.
To weagle - you had it over to the person at the airline counter unlocked it then goes back to TSA for inspection where they will lock it and send it through.
One time I flew from Virginia to Seattle with a stop at JFK. The TSA in Virginia screwed something up so TSA at JFK needed to recheck the case. I got called over the speaker to go to the nearest checkpoint so they could get my keys and reinspect.

Better make sure where your layover is, flying into NYC could be a huge problem.

Might be FedEx for me then. I don't want those clowns fingering my Cordoba.

I've checked firearms quite a few times and it's really not a big deal. No need for TSA approved locks. A sturdy case and standard locks are OK. You will have to go to baggage claim to pick them up wherever you arrive. I always disassemble or remove the bolt (just make sure it's in the same case) just as an extra precaution but it's not necessary. Don't sweat it, just read the regs on TSA's website plus it's way cheaper than shipping.

FedEx to my buddy's house out there.
Hope your buddy has an FFl, but in any case you wouldn't be able to have a residential address for an FFL so what you just described is highly illegal

When I flew with 3 handguns they inspected the contents then I put MY lock on the case before handing it back to them. There was no way it could be opened again (without destroying my lock obviously) until arriving to my destination

This thread reminds me I am still pissed about not being helped on the same exact question that you pose here...

Could I ship it to myself for pickup at a FedEx location?
