Since we're thin at DT, why not move to a 3-4? It works in the pro's, why not college? We've got plenty of LB's and DE's but very few tackles.

Thomas and Lacouture would see the field the most but have some time to rest between series.

We're getting gashed up the middle and have no pass rush. The extra LB could help against the run and rush. The extra speed on D couldn't hurt either.

Defensive guru's, please explain why this wouldn't work?

Ask Steve Spurrier at South Carolina about the
3-4.

You don't move from a 4-3 to a 3-4 overnight. The principles are completely different. You wouldn't switch back in forth either. We have recruited and continue to recruit for a 4-3. We are a little thin this year, but no way we could switch our base defense.

Since we're thin at QB, why not put one of the RB's in the position and just run the ball every play?

The role of the D-line is completely different in a 3-4. We don't have that personnel. Ask Glen Doresy on big the difference is.

Dude... Were getting gashed up the middle in a 4-3. And you wanna take away 1 of the DTs so you would have just 1 in there? Get gashed even worse.

And the key to a 3-4 is a huge stud NT. Which we don't have.

And dude... Chavis knows what he is doing. He's a great DC.

this is the big reason right here, we would need a guy like mt. cody. the only person that could probably come right in and fit the nose guard role would be valentine.

I'm of the opinion we leave the defensive scheme to he defensive coordinator that has proved his worth a thousand times over during his tenure at LSU.

Rascal and Hunter become OLBs in a 3-4. As mentioned, you need a big DT that can clog the middle of the line and play both A gaps. Our current DTs become 3, r, or 5 techs depending on scheme. If we're short on DLine now, we'd be really short in a 3-4.

The td with the love dude was not up the middle and went for nearly 50 yds. Gordon was making his yds on moves not up the middle.

Great responses - Didn't we run several 3 DL sets in the 2nd half? I remember Godchaux lining up over the center on at least one. I'll see if I can post a still photo.

Obviously short yardage is a different story. How about a change of pace every now and then from 4 DL to 3 DL? At least you force OC & QB to think a little.

Thanks for input!

Take a look at some recent sec teams to switch to the 3-4

Bama in 07 lost to UL Monroe
Georgia in 09 or 10 lost to Colorado and ucf

Florida lost to ga southern last year

There are struggles during the first year switch until players get used to the system. He biggest piece of the d is literally and figuratively the nose. If you don't have a huge guy that takes up at least 2 blockers on every play then it isn't going to work.

It can be done. But i doubt chavis is comfortable coaching a 3-4, and we havent recruited 3-4 defensive lineman. So we may get crushed for a year or two with it. If you can accept all of that, then i say go for it
