What makes them different/more powerful than other states?
LA lacks of culture, alcoholism and proliferation of criminally inclined public officials mean everyone else with power and or influence dies of kidney failure or in prison

That's right and coroners can also have you committed to the 'crazy' hospital.

Among other things, they control most of the patronage jobs in a rural parish, they collect the property and sales taxes, and they're in a position to do more favors for people than anybody else.

ETA: for example, it's not unheard of for a sheriff to have a deputy give someone a ride to the doctor.

Yet the coroner doesn't have to be a Dr.

aside from being the head law enforcement officer in the Parish... the Sheriff is also the main tax collector... including property tax

from the all-knowing WikiPedia (said w/ some sarcasm)

quote:

The sheriff is in charge of all criminal investigations and is responsible for executing court orders and process. The sheriff is the collector of ad valorem taxes and other taxes and license fees as provided by law and is the keeper of the public jail in the parish.

for those who don't know... ad velorem tax is the property or real estate tax

Not sure of the details, but it's something like that.
Harry Lee was one of the most powerful people in the state. Nobody could mess with him.

I bet 75% of the sheriffs and parish presidents are corrupt.

Isn't sales tax through school boards?

Could be. I may be mistaken. I know the school board receives the funds, but I don't know who collects them

You ever notice that almost all police cars have the name of the sheriff on them? Harry Lee was pretty much elected sheriff for life by the people of JP.

They are collected through parish sales tax commmissions, which are subject to the Police Jury, IIRC.

The sheriff collects property taxes and all other "revenue" such as fines, etc.

You write out the check for your property taxes to the sheriff, not the parish. So you don't won't to write a hot check to him/her.

I can remember seeing media footage of Jack Stephens and Harry Lee seeing seeing each other after Katrina and it looked like two mafia bosses having a sit down.

Sheriff's in La are the most powerfull in the nation. The main reason is they control their own budgets and do not answer to a parish\county board of commissioners like in other states.

I'd rather be a DA than a Sheriff, but your point is valid.
