I saw it reported during the pre game for northwestern Vs Cal that Northwestern had made their grass an inch longer to " slow the competition" First of all, that's a bitch move if I've ever heard of one. Second, is it against any regulations??
ETA:: The way she reported it sounded like it was either something she over heard or something some dumbass told her not thinking before they spoke.

Notre Dame was notorious for this. They installed field turf this offseason.

ND has done this forever( before the change to turf this year)
Didn't they do it during the "Bush Push" game?

i dont see the problem
both teams are playing on the same field conditions
yeah okay, reggie bush is slower on big grass....guess what? that makes your white 250 Lber even slower than he already was so it really makes no difference

Nothwestern let the grass get really really long when they played ohio st a few years ago.

maybe they're just trying to build up the root system....it would make for a safer playing surface.

I doubt they made their grass longer... they just didn't cut it as low... or didn't cut it this week...
I doubt there's a regulation for what kind, or how long your grass is supposed to be.

nice theory, but, given the same amount of fertilizer and water, a plant's root system benefits from shorter leaves and vice versa.
but I would rather fall on thicker grass (longer leaves) than shorter grass.

Love how everyone says ND does this forever but theres never any visual proof.
Plebs? When will they ever learn

Depends on how short you are talking and what grass you are talking about, but for the most part, root systems are reduced at lower mowing heights.

So you're saying that Notre Dame never purposely left the grass higher?

Haven't searched the web yet to see if there is a video of it but I remember very distinctly watching that game and the broadcasters making a point to point out ND's grass. Perhaps it was on the gameday show earlier in the day.

When I was a freshman at Bama, we were in the game real early (pledgeship) and Saban was walking the field in his suit about 3.5-4 hours before the game. He bent down and felt the grass. Said something to the guy with him, and two minutes later all four mowers were out cutting the field before the game.

Height of grass has nothing to do with roots. Ph of soil and water content determine that. Keeping a field cut at a consistent level, say 1", will broaden bermuda leaf surface area which provides better teaction.
As for height settings, i noticed northwesterns was high the other day, but they have different grass than in the southern states. I think LSU cuts at 11/16ths of an inch (not fact). I keep my high school field between 1.25" - 1.5"
And its perfectly legal to leave grass higher and it is done. Ive heard Saban changes it weekly. (Talking 1/4" difference at most)

Height of the grass has everything to do with root growth. ESPECIALLY, as I said, with a given amount of water/fertilizer.
If there is only so much food to go around, the plant feeds it priorities... and the unfortunately, the roots are on the bottom of it's priority list. Reproduction is Priority 1 (seeds), and feeding itself is Priority 2 (leaves).
As a general statement, if you want healthier roots, have shorter leaves. Just Biology 101.
The pH of the soil does determine if nutrients will be made available to the plant.

Yep. I know a handful of people who have actually played a game on that field and they all said the same thing, you could barely see your shoes when walking out on the field
