Got an initial survey in the mail to sign up my house as participating in Neilsen. Any pros/cons?

I did it. I decided I watch way too much tv.

Yes, $2 initially for you to sign up, then $30 when they send you the booklets to write down what you watch.
I've done it twice $64 total

Pros: You get $5 cash
Cons: You have to fill out a survey.

No time at all. You can technically just put the tv was off all week.

They can be tedious if you fill them out honestly, especially if you have a wife and kids watching 3-4 different TVs throughout the day. It's one booklet per TV, and you have to write the name of the show, channel number, network name, and mark how long each person was watching it.
I initially told them I had 4 TVs, but when I got the booklets, I got lazy and said we only watched 1 TV that week, and marked all the programming on one booklet.
I've done the radio survey for them before, and the TV survey at least twice.

I feel like they should just do this digitally now a days.
Seems like a very important number $$ wise that's compiled somewhat arbitrarily.

They do have the Nielson boxes that require you to enter a code on a remote every time you watch TV, and you get paid monthly for it. I'm not sure what it takes to be selected for one, and what the difference is between that and the surveys as far as how the information is used.

Gotcha. How about that? Did no know.

I learned of their existence when my daughter started at an in-home daycare as an infant. The mother had one connected to all her TVs. I forgot what she said they were paying her, but I remember her saying she kind of regrets it because of the hassle. Four people living there, each of them with a unique code that they must enter into the remote when they start watching TV for the purposes of gathering demographic data. The TV still works if you don't enter your code, but since the device phones home regularly, someone from Nielsen would eventually call to "gently remind" them to always enter their code.

We are currently a Nielsen family. We don't fill out books - each TV has a settop box. When you turn on the tv, you press a specific button for each family member who is watching. The info gets uploaded to Nielsen each morning.
They gave me $100 cash after the install. Twice a year, they send each of my kids a small catalog with toys and the kids pick a toy and it gets sent to them. They send the adults a check for $35, I think.
Besides those pros, it's funny to think that you count as a couple 100,000 viewers as you watch totally crap shows or when you max out the box for an LSU game.
The cons - twice a year they come out and check the equipment and make you take a lengthy survey. Also, they will occasionally call and leave a message if you break the rules like watch tv without selecting a viewer. They will want to track your internet browsing, too, but that's voluntary and I declined. Also, a bunch of red lights on the box start blinking after 20 minutes or so to remind you to make sure the info you entered is accurate.
If you received a survey, they've already identified you as a potentially good demo for their service. Your responses will confirm that. Do it!

You just fill it out as you watch tv, or at the end of the day if you didn't watch anything.
I was asked regularly to participate, but since cutting the cord, I hadn't watch television (outside of my computer) at all the last two times I filled a survey out. I doubt they'll use me anymore.

I have done their radio ratings survey a couple of times and thought it was pretty cool. Let's just say all of the LSU programming in my area got pretty good ratings when I was doing it!...
It is prett cool to think how many thousands of households you represent. I have to say, I did get tired of messing with it by the time it was done...
