Police Mistake Black Producer in Town for Emmys as Bank Robber

quote:
Producer Charles Belk was held by Beverly Hills police for nearly six hours last Friday after police mistook him for another bald, black man—one who robbed a Citibank. Belk, visiting for Emmys, was on his way to put money in his parking meter when he was detained and hauled off to a police station.
quote:
Police, meanwhile, in a statement released to the Los Angeles Times, maintain that Belk was "properly detained" given the "totality of the circumstances." Belk was arrested by police, officials say, because he "matched the physical characteristics of the second suspect and was in the area of the bank shortly after the robbery." A witness apparently identified Belk as the suspect.
Another data point in deepening our understanding of how truly flawed human perception and memory is and why "eyewitness accounts" should not be granted much credibility.
quote:
"The Beverly Hills Police Department deeply regrets the inconvenience to Mr. Belk and has reached out to him to express those regrets and further explain the circumstances," police said in their statement.
quote:
But according to Belk's account, police were reluctant to review security footage of the robbery:
What I don't get………WHAT I DON"T GET, is, why, during the 45 minutes that they had me on the curb, handcuffed in the sun, before they locked me up and took away my civil rights, that they could not simply review the ATM and bank's HD video footage to clearly see that the "tall, bald headed, black male"… did not fit MY description.

25 years ago I was installing carpet with my brother, that's what he does, and we were pulled over at gun point, suspected of robbing a bank.
Shyt happens, white people just don't bych about it. As a matter of fact I was happy to cooperate with the police, knowing my money was in that bank

My brother got pulled over a couple of weeks ago by a black cop because his truck fit the description of a stolen truck.
He cooperated fully. Showed them his registration and his CC permit. Told them that he had a gun in the truck. They ran everything and let him go.
Not a bit of drama was had. No news stories.

Did you even read the story? This guy was actually ARRESTED.
I bet you wouldn't have been "happy to cooperate" in that case.

I think we white people have been pretty open with the fact that all black people look the same to us. This really shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone at this point.

White people have also been arrested and didn't mind a bit. Happens all the time. Happy to be arrested, in fact.

Simply cannot bring themselves to admit the obvious truths of this country.

Do you seriously believe that this particular kind of shite happens as regularly to white people as it does to black people?

So what? Who cares? Why is this news? People get mistaken everyday by law enforcement.
I was held in the back of a cop car 3 years ago for over 2 hours because of a warrant that I knew I was not for me. Turns out that I was right and it was a person with the same name. I even said, are you running my drivers license number because it will show you have the wrong dude.
Original cop who held me was black, I probably should have went to the news stations with my groundbreaking story seeing how everyone is so interested in race and law enforcement.

Yea without a doubt considering the small black population compared to whites. If you don't then you are probably a racist who thinks the world owes you something.

And no white people have wver been arrested because of mistaken identify.
If a persons car fits the descriltion of a bank rubber, and he looks very similar, then why not go the caution route? Why should anyone not want the police to take all precautions.
People just want to gripe and bych about police doing their jobs.
If there was no police, I bet you would WANT SOME POLICE THEB.

Last stand of the racists....let me guess...you probably had a black friend too when you were growing up.
Fact is, to be black and live in America means the police will in fact frick with you. Only the narrow-minded will try to justify it.
Carry on.

While I agree that there is definite bias, it is not irrational bias. The stats are overwhelming.
It's established fact that black men commit a disproportionate number of crimes. From 1976 to 2005, blacks (who make up 13% of the population) committed over 52 percent of all murders in America.
I don't say that with any bit of glee, nor does it justify the arrest of the man in the story, but it's not as if some blacks aren't responsible for the stereotypes.
Prejudice happens when middle Americans, in their suburban houses in suburban counties, watch constant looting on the news.
Do policemen force blacks to loot? No.
This will get downvoted by asurob1 and the OP, but this isn't exactly a one sided oppression.
