Is this a sign that my hard drive is going bad?

Hopefully I can get some help. I don't think it is much of an issue but on a year old machine with a SSD it is worrisome to see a message like this.

quote:

Volume Bitmap needs minor repair for orphaned blocks.

what happened is earlier today my computer (early 2013 Mac pro 15 inch) got the mac version of the blue screen of death. It started up fine. I verified disk it told me to repair it. I restarted pressed command R repaired it and it appears it is all fixed.

I got the above message while repairing it.

So is this a sign that the drive may be going bad or is this a simple error that does't mean much. I know SSDs are supposed to have a long life on them because there are no moving parts.

I'm sure someone will ask this, but yes I back up my computer. Ever day on a drive that is 250GB larger than my internal drive.

TIA.

That's a new one for me. Sounds more like corruption, and a quick Google suggests that it's related to FileVault.

Otherwise, if the problem persists and disk utility is failing to repair it, time to do take it to an Apple store or authorized service center of some sort. Doesn't necessarily mean the SSD is faulty (could just be something that OS X fricked up itself), but you never know. SSD controller chips can fail just like anything else.

Disk utility fixed it but my question, is this a sign that something worse may be going on.

I'm not really concerned though. I back up every day and my Comptuer is protected till August 2016.

Generally, it's mechanical hard drives that perform poorly as a warning sign prior to failure, whereas SSDs are either working or completely dead. But we've had a much larger sampling size and timeframe to observe the behavior of hard drives.

Most good SSD makers have software for their drives that can check the health.
