My female german shorthair is in heat, and we are taking her to the stud this saturday for a couple of days. This is our first time breeding a dog. Any and all tips are welcome!
ETA: We bred her about a month ago. She had an ultrasound done today, and the vet said anywhere from 8-10 pups. They will be ready to go to their homes for Christmas.

Get a vaginal cytology done at the vet office to make sure she is in the right stage or the heat and brucellosis test the stud. Make sure they tie up and be ready in case she tries to pull away. That can cause vaginal prolapse which will pretty much end her reproductive career

She's actually going to be at a vet, where the owner of the stud works. Would AI be a good rout to go? Because she's a very timid dog, might not let the stud mount her.

A.I. in dogs is so easy that, if she is at the vet already I'd just have them do it. It prevents the chance of injury during breeding and ensures that the semen is making it to the right spot.
I was going to A.I. my female this time but I lost my breeding pipettes when I moved. Ruger decided to take care of business himself

I hear pointdog33 was disappointed he didn't get to collect from ole Ruger this time for AI.

Nothing gets a party started like a good dog collection
You'll have to let lil'bandito come over and learn from Ruger-man

I will ask them about that when we head there this weekend. What about while she is pregnant, anything to watch out for?
Posted on 8/28/14 at 4:29 pm to JTM72
Eclampsia can happen which can be life threatening
The one thing we had to watch was mastitis, the milk glands get hard, and red from infection.

I can't believe i am reading this
what ever happenned to just turning ole thunder out on a bitch in heat and having a cold beer.
Taking the dog to the vet?
Giving ole thunder a reach-around?
Catching his wigglers then Lord knows what?
Dogs have been getting busy since there were dogs. Why not just let them handle up?
ShEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE---it

If he wants to breed her he will. And he won't care if she likes it or not.

Would now be an appropriate time for a rape joke?

I've had males miss heats/not breed on 3 different occasions. A.I. plus vaginal cytology exam doesn't miss. To me, it's worth the extra effort to make sure I get puppies when I want them. My master's in animal repro so I practice my schooling.

Oh, so you are one of the guys that help Jack of a horse.

Bulls, Stallions, Goats, White-Tails, Red Deer. If it has balls I can get the juice out dead or alive.
I've also done IVF, Embryo Transfer, and the lab I was at does a ton of stem cell work.

You sound like a Jack off all trades.
