How does a tiny state like South Carolina have so much homegrown football talent

Seems like they just keep producing tons of talent, and not just the guys that go to USC or Clemson but ones that go out of state. Do they have an East German 1970s program going up there?

well it's the like 24th most populous state, so it's not like it's "tiny"

And many of the more populated states do not put much emphasis on football

Its the hormones in the chicken.

So why does Ole Miss suck? It's not like they have Vanderbilt's academics.

College football is cyclical.
There were times when OM > South Carolina.
And plenty of talent comes from Mississippi. He's not talking just about SoCar.

Alabama schools and LSU steal them.
No one's choosing Ole Miss or MSU over the other 3.
ETA: The OP was asking about talent in SC, not necessarily how well USCe or Clemson are as teams.
There is plenty of talent in Mississippi, they just usually choose to go elsewhere.

You are correct. That is a secondary question. I.E. with all the talent from the state (per that map ) why is Ole Miss not a power.

Aren't there like 5 SEC schools within 5 or so hours of Ole Miss? Sounds like a tough spot.

1. South Carolina has almost 2 million more people than Miss.
2. Both South Carolina and Miss. have two big schools dividing their population (USC/Clem. & OM/MSU), however 1/2 of nearly 5 million is a larger pool to draw from than 1/2 of 3 million
3. The South Carolina schools generally supplement players from a huge border state, Georgia. The Miss. schools on the other hand, can't do as good of a job in supplementing players from its two prominent border states, LA and AL (which combined only equal GA's population). LA and AL do a good job of keeping their guys "in state"

Most of that map is understandable, except for that patch in far northeast California. I wonder how that happened?

Crazy thing is we nearly have the exact same demographics as AL but the two schools have but a shadow of the combined history of AU and 'Bama. Clemson does have their one national title and some success so I can't speak for them.
However, as Spurrier has mentioned in recent interviews, SC fans have always supported their team and attended game but they were never expected to or asked to donate serious bucks to make the program worth something. That has changed, and now SC and Clemson are routinely in the top 10 over these last couple of years.
The state itself may not be as deep in high school talent as our neighbors but we do produce some legitimate top talent. SC has been able to grab those the last few years and then get some good ones out of NC, GA, and FL.

Historically, U. Georgia has been considered clearly superior to USC. Since this is no longer true Spurrier has done very well recruiting quality Ga. HS players.

This. It's one spot behind Alabama, which also churns out enough football talent to support 2 SEC schools while also being cherry-picked here and there by other schools out of state.
I'd hardly call either of those "tiny."

I'm guessing that is Sacramento.

See that tiny spot in Seattle,Washington? That's where all the NBA players come from.
Per Seattle Weekly:
