i doubt there's another techie on here who races bicycles but this is big news. shimano has pretty much killed this category with the release of Di2 6 years ago..Campagnolo can't compete..and SRAM has been completely quiet.

But now, it looks like in addition to making the leap to electronic shifting from mechanical, they're raising the bar one step further and eliminating ALL THE WIRING

this is great news for triathletes with difficult-to-wire TT bike design and those of us who like a cleaner look to their bikes and hate having to constantly swap out and adjust wires and keep them clean.

here's a couple of pics of the shifters and front & rear derailleurs with the battery clearly visible.

I'm super pumped. This won't come cheap..my guess is just the shifters, front & rear derailleurs alone will cost north of $3,000.00 and that doesn't include the other components.

LOOKS BADASS

Will be extremely badass and probably not work well. No way I'd buy the first run.

I can't wait to hack that sucker and send you into a low gear on a decline.

ETA:

Or incline. That'd be funny too.

Was this question asked? What does this solve?

I am contemplating moving from Chorus 11 to Super Record Electronic--I understand it actually works pretty well (not that I need it, but it seems like a pretty cool gadget).

that's quite an upgrade.

To the other poster.. Electronic shifting definitely has advantages.. One thing in particular is it trims the front derailleur as the rear is shifting to prevent chain rubbing.

That and it's cool.

Electronic shifting is much smoother and consistent compared to mechanical, especially while under load.

Wireless is the wave of the future because it allows you to clean up the front end of the bike significantly by reducing cables, making the bike more aerodynamic.

I would do just the Record, but Campy is no longer making Record in electronic--too close to Super Record, so it's Chorus or Super Record.

Yeah... I'm fine with my SRAM Red. I just can't see myself spending that much money on components, just for the components. Maybe when I buy a road bike in the future though. It's gotta be the whole set for me for some reason

Anything saved with less air drag (probably so little can't be measured anyway)...will be offset with the weight of batteries..transmitters and receivers (again, so little can't be measured anyway)

Anything to make someone get the next model

Sorry for being a dick lol

Super Record, Shimano Di2 and RED are honestly overkill for 95% of cyclists out there.

However since cycling seems to be an old/rich man game, you can bet they will sell a billion of these.

I raced on ultegra and 105 and those are fine. You will not win a race because you installed DA or RED over a lesser group. However, once you go below 105, there is a definite loss in both quality and durability. SRAM and Campy are similar although frick CAMPY.

The only mechanicals I had in a race was due to the failure of my Record components to be dialed in properly. I'm not a fricking pro cyclist who has a wrench on staff all the time to keep tweaking that shite.

Shimano is 'install and forget' for the most part. The shite just works and its precision built by little OCD japanese people.

For those asking questions, here are the top 3 groups from the 3 major players along with pricing from a REAL WORLD retailer, not MSRP pricing

********************

Shimano Dura Ace Di2 $3,729.99 Yep, that's $4,000 for the 9 components listed below.

SRAM RED $2,617.90 (NON ELECTRONIC)

Campagnolo Super Record EPS Group Set $4,349.99

Campy electronic garbage $4,400

which group?

SRAM has the unenviable task of being "Ford" trying to compete with "Toyota".

Shimano has had a stranglehold on high end racing components since the late 1980s.

SRAM is new on the scene but has busted their arse to try to differentiate themselves..and yes they've had some real component LEMONS in the past but here's where they excel:

- unprecedented return policy and fixing stuff that breaks in conjunction with local bike shops

- they show up at amateur bike racing and club events like centuries and provide free wrenches and giveaways and in general, go around & ask questions of the racers and if they need help and FOLLOW THROUGH

shimano is like frick you, our shite rocks.

So SRAM has really done an amazing job in a short time turning what appeared to be a 2-company contest into 3..and gaining alot of fans in the process.

eta i still prefer shimano

This could be great for serious racers but I don't see myself going to electronic shifting anytime soon.

I'd forget to charge the batteries. Sure makes for a clean looking bike though.

got my arse kicked pretty bad last time in the cat4 race.

actually i knew i was going to fall apart before the last climb so i went out solo early on just to say i was leading the cat4 race.

i got swept up on the stairstep climb like i was standing still and just laughed and waved goodbye to everyone.

frick those 150lb cyclists
