We live in a 100yr old NO house and there is a never ending list of projects. My SO always wants us to hire contractors but with this latest project I'm putting my foot down. It can't be that hard to install backsplash in a kitchen can it?

what do you consider "yourself"?

can your Dad help? and what if you Dad owned his own contractor/construction company? does that count as a pro?

cause if not, then I do everything myself

actually I hired out my concrete countertops

I don't think so. I'd definitely do that on my own.

ETA: I should mention I enjoy doing stuff like that, so that I wouldn't pay to get done. Now painting on the other hand I just painted on my own for the last time. I'm completely over that.

Exactly. All these buff dudes renovating a whole house in 30mins makes a guy get competitive.

I'll usually tackle just about anything inside or outside my house. However, I do tread a little more carefully on things revolving around electricity and plumbing.
I'll usually defer to the experts if it means an error I make due to lack of experience or skill could potentially ruin my home of kill me.

Been pretty effective so far.

Backsplash isn't too hard. Lots of videos online and books at Home Depot to walk you through.

Myself? Built a 12'x14' shed (to include shingles, windows, and barn-style door); repaired sprinkler system; repaird the deck (as in almost total replacement); and built a swing set. Nothing is impossible and there will always instruction available. Also replaced all fans and lighting fixtures.

I'll paint, install fixtures/fans/etc, landscape, and tile.

I won't deal with plumbing, gas, or electrical.

I'm about to try and build a fence by myself. No help from pops.

It will probably fall over the next time the wind blows.

I had someone else lay concrete for me... I'm not doing that shite.

I did put together my own gazebo. I've done some electrical work. I am going to install my own ceiling speakers throughout my house.

Put up a fence, installed surround sound, added an electrical outlet, painted some rooms, just had to put in a new mailbox, had to replace a coupling on our washer last year.

I'm going to get someone to put in wood flooring. And I'm not fricking with the plumbing.

Built a picnic table. Now I'm trying to refinish it. I want to stain it black and fill the cracks with red epoxy.

We renovated the kitchen last year and got a general contractor. I hated it. I had to watch them like a hawk and point out all of the shitty work (a lot) they did and make them correct it.... It was really one guy in particular, everything he did was half arse and awful. After that experience, I'd rather do it myself and if I get to a place where I need a pro I'll get one.

I completely redid my 60 year old house when I bought it. We did everything from electrical to plumbing to floors (wood, tile, brick), built cabinets, changed windows, etc. We updated everything!

Only thing I didn't do was AC work.
