Say from a great aunt or uncle with no children, grand parent or even family friend.

I remember when I was younger my father received some land with oil wells on it and stock options from an uncle he had not talked to in years.

I got 70 grand when I turned 18 from a great-uncle's estate.

I had a fun two years.

I think the land pays off around $100 a month, lol. But still pretty cool having a couple of acres in east Texas.

Got about 10k from an uncle with no heirs. There was a total of 500k but was sliced up between many family members

My grandmother didn't leave behind much of an estate but I did get a part of it. It is under $100/month, just enough to pay my monthly electric bill and that's it, so it isn't a huge windfall or anything like that. But it's what she had left and I thank her for it.

Grandmother managed to squirrel away $200.00 each for me and all of the grandkids. Considering she only got about $350.00 per month from social security, I was very suprised. It ain't much but made me feel good.

that is a damn nice gesture by your grandma...glad you appreciate it for what it was, too....funny how something like that can mean so much...

11k from my father's mother three years ago. All 39 of my first cousins on that side of the family did.

Nothing special obviously, but not a bad little drop of unexpected spending change.

Yes, I was dumb and irresponsible at 18.

I'm sure most of you were already contributing the yearly maximum to your IRA.
