Girl dies in swimmimg accident

quote:

Rickey Jones, Tensas Parish Sheriff, says four girls were swimming in the lake near the boat house when they were shocked by the ladder of the pontoon boat. Jones says they were called to a private camp on the lake around 2:00 PM Sunday afternoon. Jones says the motor in the boat house that operates the lift, had a malfunction and grounded on the pontoon boat and charged it. Two of the girls had to be retrieved from the water after they were shocked. A 13-year-old girl has since died at the hospital, a 17-year-old girl was also flown to Rapides General and is in serious condition.

Damn, never know these days what can happen. People with pontoon boats check your wiring

Sad news. I saw some posts about the incident last night on FB, but didn't know what happened. I thought it was a drunk boater at fault, just because that's the norm on boating accidents. This is completely unfathomable.

Had a similair issue in this area back at the beginning of the summer. A houseboat had a grounding issue and shocked a child as he tried to climb back on board. He went limp and came close to drowning. Luckily someone saw what happened and jumped in to help him.

Several years ago we rented a place on the lake and i got a pretty good shock when i touched the ladder on the dock - we had t ofind the breaker and shut the power off to be able to swim.

But this says the motor in the boat house...it operated the lift. How would that get a charge to the boat thru straps? I'm not hugely educated in electrical knowledge.

Steel cable from the lift was probably in contact with barge somewhere

Had a similar incident several years ago after water rose over our boat house, once it went down I was pulling an aluminum boat in and grabbed the cables to guide it.

Woke up in the bottom of the boat after being shocked and knocked out cold. Lucky I didn't fall in the water.

Any electrical power run near water needs to be tended to very very carefully. Grounding is way more important than people realize.

Not pontoon boat wiring. DC would be fine. Boat lift motor was grounding to pontoon
