And if not, then why is the West blamed for many of the world's problems?

I find it pretty remarkable and civilized how the West basically not ceased a single square mile of land through power or conflict for so long.

The West is so passive in asserting its heritage/values/traditions that it's allowing itself to be out populated from within by immigrant Latins/Arabs/African Americans out-birthing the traditional White/Euro/Anglo founders.

Because its easier to blame an outside force than yourself.

What about those who say the West plunders the resources of other nations?

I'd attribute that more to free market / globalization than to "the west". Japan's activity in the world's economy is a good example.

The reason I ask is because Ghazi said in that other thread:

quote:

well if we are speaking historically Western imperialism has ruined people for over 500 years. The genocide and extermination of the Native Americans, the plunder of African resources contributing to the impoverishment of the continent and of course 300 years of slavery and cultural erosion, and imperialism and meddling in MIddle East due to oil causing artificial borders, terrorism, brutal regimes, poverty , anti-West sentiment, etc . Western imperialism, the root of many world problems.

yes and no.

yes because it technically has caused some problems (although I disagree with "most")

no because if it wasn't western imperialism, it would be some other kind of "imperialism" with a different set of problems.

the white man "won" for now.

The U.S. is responsible for its OWN problems.

Imperialism is great. That's why the British owe a great debt of gratitude to the Romans who occupied them when they were painting their faces blue and living in trees.

No. The "world's problems" are simply the consequences associated with limited resources and human nature. If anything, the world is much more civilized and a better place to live due to Western technology, development and way of life in general. Once the ignorant outgrow Islam, which will take many years, the world will be an even better place to live by a wide margin. Basically ignorance is still the root of many of the world's problems.

Some. Europe fricked Africa up, and they're definitely still dealing with it.

Yeah! Africa was doing great before Europeans arrived and introduced that silly idea of reading and writing.

Slavery is an evil practice and I' would never condone it. That said, I don't see why modern blacks are still outraged about the whole slavery thing- if their ancestors were never brought over do they think they would be roaming the fields in tune with nature in some kind of imaginary Serengeti utopia?

They aren't the only race to ever be enslaved and displaced, throughout history every ethnicity has been handed the short stick, think of it as a historical learning experience.

The enslavement of the Jews arguably made them the most powerful group in the world through diaspora.

Basically the western world is responsible for every modern-day amenity we have today, and enjoys the benefits of their progress the most. Other countries get the runoff, which they wouldn't' even be getting in the first place without the advancements made by Westerners. Once a group of people get a taste for a luxury it's not long before A) everyone wants equal access to it and B) more and more people believe they are entitled to more of it.

Aside from the printing press, steam engine, automobile, airplane, space travel, personal computers, medical cures & treatment for all manners of diseases, freedom of speech/association/religion et al, and many other things that have allowed mankind to live longer, healthier and more-prosperous lives, what really has "The West" done for mankind? I suppose we'd all be better off living in some manner of global caliphate.
