What is the veracity behind the many stories about hackers getting NSA jobs?

You hear all the time a hacker makes a name for themselves. They either get caught and do some time, or don't get caught...either way, they get offers to work for the government because the government needs smarter hackers than the ones that are trying to hack in from other nations/enemies and on our own turf.
I just want to know how often this happens.
I know more stories of hackers turning their skills to things like personal computer security for the home, and working in other forms of integrated sciences working on patterns to fight disease, famine, and the like.

There are stories of it happening in the past but id say few and far between these days. Most "hackers" these days are what you refer to as script kiddies. No real skill, just point a tool at a target and hit auto pwn. The feds train their own security peeps more often than not now

It happens occasionally. Facebook hired a handful of guys a long time ago after they managed to put together a worm that made Facebook profiles look like MySpace

I find all of this interesting, because this may be one of the few ways to get into the work force that can be done for free and without a "portfolio" of sorts.
One good idea and implementing it with your own skill.
Only things that come close are
1) Entrepreneur: BUT Way too much time and money and resources
2) Writer: BUT Need a solid portfolio and time and money for publishing
3) Game Designer: BUT Way too much time and sometimes money and may need a portfolio
Seriously, this is probably one of the cheapest and easiest ways to get a job in the long run. The only thing you're sacrificing is time...to get really good.

Getting a good job in InfoSec is typically not cheap and never easy. There is a ton more that goes into it than "hacking" your friends facebook by guessing his password. I wore many hats in the IT industry for 10 years before getting into security.

If it happened, I imagined it happened longer ago than today. Government is slow, so I bet for awhile the hackers were more skilled than who they had, and they probably didn't ha e training programs in place, etc.
Once that ball got rolling, the incentive to hack your way to a job decreases as the odds grow much higher that they'll just put you in jail because you're nothing special.
At least, theoretically that's how I'd see the situation playing out if it ever happened

Makes sense.
I also think they may have more positions now too.
