If I was to hit my neighbors unsecured WiFi signal ..would I have a new "unique identification" or would the device itself(laptop/tablet etc..) I use allow websites ans/or providers to track me as someone that they have recognized before?

yes, you would get a new IP address handed to your machine from the DHCP of your neighbors router. An IP address associated to your machine is not a reliable way to track you down. With that being said, your MAC address does NOT change, and is unique to your device and could be used to identify your device and by extension....you

Yep... Your laptop has a unique MAC address assigned to it. Identifying networks that the specific MAC address has connected to before, they could find out who you are.

If you want to remain totally anonymous, steal someone's laptop, never login to anything that could identify you, and connect to a network that isn't yours or anyone you associate with.

Every device has its own mac address. So if your neighbor were to check which devices were connected to their network, they would see your device's mac address.

But if your neighbor is stupid enough to have an unsecured wifi, I doubt they know about that anyway.

If you have ever visited the site before it has most likely installed a cookie. That also helps them site recognize the repeat visitor.

Does a iPhone or other smart phone have a MAC address as well ?

( or is the phone number itself the unique ID to that device)

Everybody talking about MAC addresses like they are some ultimate ID, but it's easy to spoof your MAC.

Mac spoofing in itself is not illegal. Mac spoofing with malicious intend could be considered illegal

Not really my point. If they know about mac addresses, and which ones correspond to their devices, they can easily kick you off the network.

A person who doesn't know that it is wise to secure their wireless network from their wireless setup screen would probably not be aware of the screen in that same wireless setup that shows what clients are currently assigned an ip from their network.
