How shady can it be when every consumer router has a function to change its own MAC address? Even Windows has the functionality to change the NIC's address built in.

no 100% true. MAC spoofing CAN be considered illegal if malicious intent can be proved.

This used to be the only way I could play XBox live in Hotels..In order to get past the splash screen, I would use a laptop to login...Then, change the XB MAC to the laptops...

you realize of course that your device also has a network id that identifies it by name in addition to the MAC address right?

so if he's even remotely savvy he could see "Crow Pie's PC" on his wireless network as well as whateve MAC address it has.

No doubt that if the neighbor wanted to see what was slowing down his connection, he could start there...

my kids will have friends come to the house for sleepovers and when i look on my router i see all kinds of shite..ipads, phones, laptops, etc. listed.

note to self: don't tell your kids the WiFi password.

I'm not sure if anybody answered the OP's question, as the conversation seems to revolve around whether or not the neighbor could see him - which is obviously a yes.

Websites you visit will log you as a separate user. Your public IP will be that of your neighbor's router. Your mac address will be used to communicate with your neighbor's router and will NOT pass through to the internet. Your neighbor's router will use its own mac to forward packets. This is with IPv4, of course.

As long as you're not doing anything illegal that would warrant an investigation then you should be safe. Enjoy.
